All Metal Hunting With C$

I have been having super luck with my new, used C$ and today I had the perfect opportunity to use the all metal mode. I was hunting a large grassy hill in a park that is 75 years old. Targets were few and far between so I thought I would try the all metal. Within a short distance, I got a signal reading 36 to 38. I flipped back to my disc program and I got an ever so weak signal. I probably would have missed it because it was so weak. It did repeat though in disc. At 12 inches, I saw silver, it was a 1945 Washington quarter. The ground on this hill is very soft and wet. Two feet away I get another hit in all metal. Checked it again in disc and it was there, but weak. From 10 inches two wheaties from the 20's. I ended up with three more wheaties, all from 8 to 10 inches and all weak, but audible in disc. The lesson I learned today was this detector is deep and and deep coins can be found in disc, but a good set of phones is a neccessity. I also have a CZ6a with a Sunray probe on it and as much as I love that detector, I have not picked it up in the last three weeks since I got my C$. The C$ feels like a feather compared to the CZ. I know there is not much difference in weight, but the C$ is perfectly balanced. I guess you might be able to notice how much I like this detector. R.L.

Tony's reply:
I realize this is a little late but just found this post of yours.

Do you remember your settings and coil size?

That is amazing, a quarter at that depth and pennies at that depth.

Also, when detecting in all metal, is your sound rather not very crisp?

Tony, the soil was real wet and this particular hill's grass is cut with big tractors. I have found clad quarters 7 to 8 inches deep. My setttings were sens 7, thresh -5, iron disc 99, nothing notched out, and volulme 10. I always ground balance in all metal and I only lift the coil 4 or 5 inches. I always get the beep confirming that ground balancing was successful. The audio in all metal is sort of mushy. Sorry I took so long to respond. R.L.

O.K. that lets me know by your settings and how you do your setup that I am doing things right. No wonder I'm getting monster depth!

I ground balance just a little differently. I too place my detector in all metal then I place my coil on the ground and lift it just a little above where I'll be swinging the coil. I wonder if this is wrong. It is a little positive when I bob the coil up and down in all metal. I've heard and experienced myself in my coin garden that a little positive GB gets better depth but it *might* be just a little unstable in some instances.

Some places I can run sensitivity up to 10 but I leave my threshold around -5 to 0 as long as it is stable. I've heard of the 525 setting.

Do you think -5 0 is too hot?

In iron infested sites with a lot of square nails do you have a best setting?

Tony, I always start out with a threshold of 0 and a sens of 7 and go from there. If the detector is unstable, I lower the sens to 6 and the threshold to -5 and if needed -10. I almost never go below a sens of 6, but I did experiment with the 525 setting and it worked great in the short time I tried it. My problem is I have been finding loads of older coins with the setup that I have been using so I don't want to play around too much. The only complaint I have with the C$ is rusty bottle caps. They seem to ring in about 35 to 38 and pinpoint just like a coin. If anybody has any tips to get rid of them, I would appreciate the advice. If you don't mind alot of tones, try hunting with nothing notched out. This is the setup that I hear the deep targets that I found in all metal. I only notch foil and tabs when I get into extreme trash. It seems that I lose a couple of inches of depth with these notches on. I know that this in not exact, but I have played with these settings alot and that is the conclusion I have came to. Not an exact science though. I wish I had one more month of hunting because I am getting close to figuring this detector out. R.L.

Oh yes the rusty bottle caps.

I have not tested this on the Coin$trike but on my Minelab Muskateer (which is in reality a relic machine and likes iron) I can tell if the item is a rusty bottle cap or not by lifting the coil a little and very quickly waving the coil back and forth across where the item is. In other words I note where the item is, and from about a foot or two away I very quickly swing the coil across the target about a foot or two past it and repeat this. If the signal disappears it is a rusty bottle cap.

It might work on the C$. I don't know. Give it a try and let me know how it works.
