hi there just got diving metal detecter and and is looking forword diving some small rivers in uk but dose any one now the law on metal detecting rivers in uk can you dive near roman setalment thanks alan

I think the main restricting factor is access to land the river goes through. If there is no public access located close to the area you want to dive you will have seek the land owners permission which can be challenging in this age of health and safety paranoia. The law should be same as for land finds, "treasure" items reported to the landowner and PAS, non treasure items over 300yrs old reported to PAS on a voluntary basis.

I am in Berkshire near the Thames but it unfortunately is controlled by the Environment agency who restricts diving with all sorts of permits and regulations. I have 15yrs detector diving experience in more tropical waters i would not mind getting in some rivers but have not pursued it as I have been enjoying searching the farm fields for now.

There is a good dvd on shallow water/ river hunting in the UK on minelabowners com

I goggled the site and it is way cool. I enjoy reading about medieval finds. I just wish one day I too could hunt and find some old piece of history. It goes with beach hunting on the treasure coast of Florida, one day. sigh.
