I found this ring on July 15, 2011 and was finally able to send it on its way to its rightful owner today. It is a State 5A Tennis Championship ring (Brighton High School). The fellow who won it (and lost it) had his name engraved on it, fortunately.
It is a very large, heavy but attractive ring, I think, made of a nickel/chromium alloy. [attachment 215240 champringsmemail02.jpg]
It has "5 Peat" engraved on one side and the player's name on the other side. [attachment 215241 champring5peat202.jpg]
His name was also engraved inside (the last name is hidden for privacy). [attachment 215242 champring03102.jpg]
The ring was buried about one inch down. I almost didn't find it because it was close to a soccer goal post. At first I thought the signal was the goal post but it sounded a little different from the when I had got near the other posts. (This park has five soccer fields). I think it was only because of the AT Pro's pro mode and the DD coil that I was able to separate the signals.
I wasn't sure how to reach the owner because I was pretty sure he is still a minor. The last name was common enough that there were too many families in the phone book to try to contact all of them. I finally decided that contacting the high school was the best way, but was concerned that the ring might just sit in a lost and found and never make it back to its owner. When I took the ring in to the principle's office the secretaries were extremely helpful. One of them knew the owner and said that he had graduated (last year) but would contact him. So, happy ending for a boy who I am sure was probably sickened by losing such a valuable memento of his achievement.
