Ring Recovery but MXT VDI question!

Well i found it- while getting ready to balance my machine, LOL! Actually eyeballed it inches away from where i set my coil down to put my phones on. Would have been in first swing of my grid to search. Nice local couple. Friends of a friend and i actually knew the guy from a local bookstore he runs. Tungsten ring lost in backyard pulling weeds. Storms chased him in along with darkness. Got the call the next day. He had his back to me telling me what he was doing and was acting out his actions thinking the ring slung off left- it was right. But a happy recovery. He turned around and i handed it to him. :clapping:
NOW>>>>>>>>>

We tested the ring- Tungsten- at +30 pulltab, coin and jewelry mode. track locked. mild soil too. Thats not normal pulltab unless contorted- mental note for future. mine hit 22-28 most common.

Then his wife placed down her hierloom tiny 4 1/2 sized white gold and platinum ring with a small stone- +2 --Yep-- foil-- no audio until i cranked the disc all the way down. wow! who digs a +2? Then she tossed down a tiny same size sterling silver ring-- Bang! a +81 --my quarters hit +83.

Platinum and white gold is worth how much??!!!! thats scary folks --- wonder what we have missed in the past--- now this was a tiny ring and it saw it but the numbers were so low...i cant dig those numbers in my trash lots- may as well sift.

Well anyway a happy return the easy way and a lesson for the newbie to MXT-- love this hobby and my MXT unit....but still a lot to learn.

Nice find and welcome to the MXT detectors. I have been loving mine, the gold rings can come in all over. My girlfriends comes in mid foil range and I found one this year high foil range. I have seen them in pull tab ranges as well, it's just a matter of how much you can stand digging. When I am in a park, there is a limit for me and I stop digging foil and pull tabs. However, if you see a number that is a little different or you are in an area that does not seem like there should be trash (actual playing field for example) then DIG! Good luck, the MXT is an awsome detector.

thanks John! my great friend downeaster lives in Maine and has been after me to get one for a couple of years. we have never met since i live in Georgia but have talked on the phone. then a great guy in California- set me up with one and i have never been happier. it has advantages. i aint as young as i used to be to dig EVERYTHING. in the parks i hunt that would require a sifter. if i dug everything i would be tossed out for public destruction of property lol!

my Maine friend downeaster is heading for the Phillipines to live around June. AND HE IS TAKING HIS WITH HIM AND SWEARS BY IT. mine is a keeper for sure.

but I'll offer my thoughts anyway.

I get pull tabs, the early ring-pulls and current pry-tab types, or parts like separated 'beaver tails' and 'rings,' over a broad range of VDI numbers. I never narrow them down too much as they can have different shapes and alloy contents.
Every year I recover small, thin gold jewelry, rings, chains pendants, etc., across a wide range of VDI read-outs. Some are down into the low-number negative zone, such as some at -4 or -2, and quite a few in the+1 on up range.

We ALL miss stuff, and that's why we can still find good targets at sites that have been hunted a lot in the past. We never get-it-all, unless we hunt in a true All Metal accept mode and recover everything.

The MXT's, and the M6, are all excellent detectors and can hit well on most of the targets we are after. We just need to do our part to help the success rate.

Carey, Monte is right on the button. Jewelry will run just about anywhere. The only rule is that there ain't no rule !! You know that I am a great believer in finding a detector that you like and learning it. The MXT has always done everything I need a detector to do for the sites that I hunt. It will remain my main detector until something seriously better comes along. I have no doubt that it will perform just as faithfully in the Phillipines as it has here. Hmmmm, I wonder where Gold Spanish Doubloons ring in ?.

Good going finding their ring. Yes, Monte knows what he's talking about. I've found gold rings at +6 before which was a tiny baby's ring size 1. Also more than not, a gold bracelet or broken chain will be in the negative. HH, Nancy

i have hunted a drained lake yearly before- every spring they drained it partially and i only had a beep and dig -- so i ran it wide open.. i dug it all.... the only thing i did was turn the unit on at Max sens and no disc. i mopped up and the owner appreciated me getting out the trash too.

Monte was question i never directly asked was the VDI numbers-- can a good target be in the negative numbers?-- i am seeing low numbers. i mop up on clad because they are spot on with dimes and qrts and a nickel usually. i try not to run disc past 2.

got a lot to learn and having the time of my life doing it! what a hobby!

Gold is a low conductor and as such it can come in anywhere from -12 to 50 something..... so if you want the gold your gonna have to dig ......:detecting:
Happy hunting.

THIS Website shows the order of conductivity of many different metals and Gold comes in 3rd for highest conductivity, least resistance and thermal conductivity alike. Aluminum is a lower conductor in all respects compared to gold but neither is by any means a low conductor. Silver being the highest conductor in all categories.

On the MXT/MXT Pro, gold can show up as high as +80 VDI.
