Ring insignia identification

New member
Found this detecting today. The insignia looks familiar but I can't remember where I've seen it. It's only the top - no ring. Any ideas? Thanks.

It's a heraldic lion, which represents bravery, loyalty, valour etc. I'm not sure if yours is English, French, Belgian or Czech. Excellent find, and I hope you find the answers you are looking for.

Thanks for the info. I done several image searches for that and whatever else I could think of to no avail. The only match to the

Try http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:HessenD1844.jpg

The lion depicted is heraldic from the German state of Hesse and probably stems from a ring of one of the many cities in the state of Hessen Germany. I was born in Marrburg a/d Lahn, Hessen, Germany. There is also http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Coat_of_arms_of_Hesse.svg.

I suspect the ring top may be older than you think and have some significance to a person who lived in the vicinity where it was found.

Thanks Ed for the great info. Any idea how I can find out more about it? As usual I tried online searches with the info you gave and nothing.

Yours is called a lion rampant (facing left or sinister as opposed to dexter - right.)

What we have here is a heraldic lion that was used in a lot of places. The one you have has no other devices like the crown or bar or stars so it may not be from that place, it might just be a decoration and not related to any place or family or even a ship. A reference to a Nazi ship is here http://books.google.ca/books?id=FS7zATMPusAC&pg=PA19&lpg=PA19&dq=lion+rampant+facing+right&source=bl&ots=4Cc74Rf1Au&sig=LytEAeFGaqtYLWxlCMw_hOD10VY&hl=en&sa=X&ei=wm5DUavzDIS9qQGAzoC4Ag&ved=0CGIQ6AEwBQ#v=onepage&q=lion%20rampant%20facing%20right&f=false

The fact that your lion is somewhat styolized, not as detailed, suggests a more decorative origin although it might be a precise copy of a particular insignia be it a military group or whatever. I suggest you just keep looking. It might have belonged to some famous or imfamous group.

This site names the various poses of lions. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lion_%28heraldry%29 and http://www.gamedecor.com/abasworld/heraldry/lions.htm

I have the same left facing lion on a fireplace bellows. It was probably bought as it had a patriotic symbol over 100years ago by my grandfather.

Nice find, any writting?

Try this link. There are a lot of similarities to your lion and this one. The spikey limbs for one.

This makes me think that this could have come from my great grandfathers house. He was Scotish. Who would have thought.
