ring and nail

on-edge

New member
had much to do all weekend but managed two short hunts, first hunt on sat was a flop only had 1.5 hrs to hunt including a 15 min. hike each way, good signals were non existant and had to resort to diggin iron so that i didn't go back empty handed and one of the nails i dug was actually unique it has a round head with a hole in it the only use i could come up with was to hang shutters or something along that line, any ideas? on sunday i hunted a soccer feild, plenty of clad, plenty of trash and a sideline silver and turq. ring stamped sterling, not much of a big hit but being my first outings it sure felt good to be out!!!! HH!

I have a ring that looks exactly like that one!! I kind of like it. Nice find anyway. Anything marked sterling or 925 is good in my book!!

Also nice. Here are a few of my silver rings.

They are VERY plentiful in the water.

scuba, holy smoke,i've got some silver ring but no where near that pile,i think you've just persuaded me into getting a water unit!

On-edge,
I have found numerous silver rings in the ground, but water hunting IS the place for gold and silver.Get you a water unit and a scoop and have at it.It is fun and a lot easier than diging dirt.Besides, you don't have to get permission if it is open to the public and detecting is allowed.
Here are some of the silver that I've found on the bottom of lakes.

dobbie,
If you are new to the hobby, you probably haven't come across one yet.Eventually you will.It will be dug up just like you do a coin. You need to sift through your dirt pile real good to find the target. If you have an elect. pinpointer,it will help you find it in the dirt pile or in the side of your dig hole.Have patients a big ole ring will find you soon.

dobbie, when i find rings they usually come when i least expect them,i don't set out to find rings in particular, the ring in the post that i found ,my detector was telling me quarter, and the only difference was the tone was a little more" there" compared to the quarters that i had been diggin,if you are diggin for targets and are unable to find them, well this is a wide topic and you should do a post concerning this and if not "think ring" and they will come! HH! good luck!

on-edge, That isn't even half my silver rings. They are very very plentiful in the water. So are religious medals :

They are everywhere. Now only if gold was as plentiful!! Wishful thinking. I get about one gold to every 3 or 4 silver and every 6 -10 junk rings I am guessing. What is nice about silver rings is they ring up as good as a silver coin. Gold however rings up with pull tabs, sinkers, and the very very pesky old shotgun shell bottoms which in some lakes can drive you crazy!! The rest of the shotgun shell was cardboard and is long gone.

Anyway, all water detectorists will tell you that they get a fair share of trash BUT it is much easier to dig in the sand and muck than it is in the ground and so we tolerate it a lot better. My best gold ring found on land was an antique ring with a natural 11.5mm pearl that I sold for 2000.00. If it would have been in a park I probably would never have dug it but it was in a parking strip in Utah.

you guys are killing me with these water finds!
tab-nabit,by the picture it really does look like a cotter pin,but its not it really is a nail of some sort.

waterbug, and scubadetector are these freshwater finds or saltwater finds or both what do you guys use for machines?

Mine are all freshwater finds. I am in Michigan and I hunt the inland lakes. This is 4 years of detecting but as I said it isn't even half my silver rings. Also the coins in the water are very plentiful also. I picked up 8 walkers and 2 barber halfs last year. I guess that is why I love the water. I am kind of burned out on land. I have 2 CZ-20 machines. It used to be my favorite detector.

there is a small creek down at the end of my road. my detector says its waterproof to 7 in. i want to detect the creek but im not sure if i should with my detector. any ideas on this would be helpful. the creek runs behind some houses, a public park a church and a shopping area. plus people use it as a shortcut to get to these places by crossing over it. also how would i go about deteccting it?

Mine were found at lake beaches in Iowa.I have more also.I use the Fisher 1280X,fine michine.I'll see if I can find a photo of my equipment, for those for those wanting to get into water hunting.Once you get started, you can modify, add, subtract any tools to fit your personal likes, dislikes.Try different things till you have the set-up that suits you.

dobbie, most land detectors have a waterproof coil, but i'm sure there are a couple of exceptions,i know some of the cheaper model don't,and some gold detectors do not.i do not know what kind of machine you have so i really don't know what to tell you,i,m sure that some one on this forum would have your answer if they knew what kind it was.if your instructions say that the coil is submerseable i would go with it ,but just don't get the electronics wet or else!(puff)!
