A different day it was.....Picked up my buddy Scott and headed to one of our favorite wooded areas, which sometimes gives up some old coins and relics. I got some coins (oldest 1950 penny), a nice intact old compact and a bag of white powder wrapped in a camo rag, stashed between two saplings beside a log with an empty flattened emptied 2 liter Coke bottle stuffed underneath the log. Ha!......I know tell tale markers of hidden treasures near-by. That bottle wasn't there because of pure laziness on someones part, but there as a marker to locate the nearby treasure wrapped up for easy locating. I wish that I could be a fly on the tree when that person who stashed it discovers that it is missing!

Here is that older compact. There are no commercial stampings on it. The area we hunted dates back to the turn of the century. I have no idea as to how old it was.

Here is the white Edmonton snow, gold or whatever you want to call it. I did a Google search to see what cocaine is selling for. It of course varies, as to what part of the world you live in. In North America, cocaine sells for about $80.00 a gram to about $140.00 a gram. I rounded it off to about $100.00 a gram for simplicity. I hunted for a couple of more hours, and I must say I was a little nervous about getting busted. How do you convince a Police Officer that ....well....."I Found It."

Anyhow, I caught up with Scott, we did a photo-op of our finds, then drove to the nearest Police Station to hand in my valuable stash, getting nada for my efforts. He repackaged it so it could be destroyed, and I asked him to weigh it, which came out to 46.6 grams.

I told him I figured it was worth a a couple of hundred bucks.....he looked at me and replied, it's worth a little more then that!:poke: Dang, another adventurous day metal detecting.

Boy oh Boy! Somebody sure is going to catch holy hell when they find that drop gone...somebody carrying that much aint afraid of nothing...I dont know, but I cant imagine thats somebodies personal supply? Gonna be some words between the dropper and the picker-upper over this...maybe they will settle it amicably, a refund will be provided, and just chalk of their loss to squirrels?:rofl:

John that's the craziest find I have ever seen, the police officer should have Thanked you at least! But he was probably frustrated that he didn't find it in order to get a attaboy from his Sargent. The thug who had stashed it will probably get a beating for losing it I'd say. That's a chunk of change he lost.

Wow......I was surprised you continued to hunt for a couple of hours at that spot! I would have split real fast not wanting to be there if the owner showed up (maybe with a gun?) We find some carzy stuff on our travels! Nice compact by the way!

Ya umm, I think you should avoid that area for a long time... did it test positive?? I dont think I would have posted pic either... you should have told the cop that if nobody claims it in 30 days that you want it back lol.. you may have to be packing heat when in that area...stay safe..

Hopefully the guy that lost it doesn't surf findmall...

You're lucky they didn't bust you. Makes no difference that you found it, you had possession of it. Very lucky. Next time i'd leave it and notify police of its existence, really. You don't need that kind of headache.

Actually, I constantly look for stuff like that too, especially when I'm hunting under totlot equipment in some parks of the inner city that sees a lot of night action, I always look up and under the structures for stuff like that poked up hidden...I've found bags of dope and pipes, but nothing that major...a good hunter pays attention to the signs that humans leave, that was very good noticing on your part, the bottle sort of being out of place and all, and not a natural empty toss..

A guy who spends a lot of time outdoors has to prepare his mind for these kinds of things so you know what to do when you eventually find it, tripping into a grow, finding that coke, etc...BillF's advice to the rest of us is solid when discovering a stash of this magnitude... But you got it off the street, and possibly got a corner dealer fired! Saved a Parent some grief too for sure...Just be super careful for a while there...these drug kids nowadays aint afraid of nobody...woe unto the old guy who falls into their merciless hands..unless hes got a mouse in his pocket named Smith. Very cool find and post! No telling what adventure awaits once a guy gets out of the house!:beers:

Down in my neck of the woods someone gonna die. The dealers kill each other for far less. 30 tapped in one of the local cities already this year.

Now that's an interesting find! It would have been much nicer to finf the $4200 after the guy sold the stuff.

Back when I lived in Florida I was always on the look out for bricks on the beach. I did find a bag with about 2 ounces of pot once in a gas station parking lot. My roomate at the time "disposed" of it for me. :)

I wouldn't tell the cops. You enter "their system" at that point, and you are(as sad as it is) their only suspect until someone else comes along. Same concept as if you walked into the station with it. If you're not gonna do something with it yourself, then just destroy it, even as simple as strewing it in the open air in the wind, or dunking it in the last creek you passed. Even leaving it where you found it and keeping quiet is a better option. It's less than 2 ounces and only coke, so it's not the scariest thing to simply leave it. I wouldn't be that surprised if a retired LEO you know well or one still working which is in your family/friends circle, wouldn't advise much the same thing. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think so.

Cops will make you #1 in the investigation if you volunteer and in this day and time, that won't be a hidden fact about you ever again. Were you guilty? Absolutely not. As the old saying in tag goes,,,"You're it right then." I doubt that even a lawyer could get that expunged from your record, not cheaply anyway. All the while, all you really did, was act like a good citizen and take it in, like you did.

It just ain't worth the personal grief which "could" follow YOU. Just sayin'

Any cop that knows how to do his job would be thinking "What dealer or user would ever turn it into the cops?" I doubt u would be number one suspect. They have a list of local dealers and users that they have come in contact with over the years, and will probably be asking informants for some info on the stash. Don't put to much stock in what is seen on TV with these types of things. Theres a lot more to it, without John being a suspect.

So John's past records won't be scoped by default and as we know these days...any and all information isn't simply erased. Your first comment makes tons of sense to us non-cops, but for the mere fact that they have to start somewhere, the "tagged, your it" delivery guy is all they have to start on so a permanent record begins. I don't personally wish myself to be investigated when any small smudges within my lifetime record is made a permanant record, without cause on my part besides handing in less than 2 ounces of simple cocaine. It makes no sense to me at a point.

Do you argue that the John walking this is won't be cataloged and likely thouroughly investigated while the case is in works and no other perk is a suspect? Why would anyone wish that upon themselves over something this low level? jm2c

Just so we're all aware of something. In the U.S., possession of cocaine in ANY amount is a felony.Period. 2 oz of cocaine comes with an "intent to deliver" or "intent to distribute" charge. That's an added 7-10 years. Its not simple, nor is it anything a law abiding citizen would want to be charged with for trying to do 'the right thing'.
5900 may have been correct in saying to not tell the police. I also think I would steer clear altogether. Who knows who might be watching.
John lives in Canada, I don't know how they handle things like this there. But I can say that my wife spent 36 years in law enforcement here in the good 'old U.S.A. and unless you're personnel friends with the local constable, don't believe for one instant that they have YOUR best interest at heart.

There is no way i would touch that stuff. I'd either leave it or call the police.
What if you got pulled over for speeding or something and they found that stuff in your pocession?
You think they'd believe the story you found it? Yeah right! Hands behind your back!

I think you were lucky.

Some good old guys can get away with explaining stuff like this to cops...Johns got a solid reputation up in that area...biggest danger was being seen by the dopers, which evidently didnt happen...then again, has anyone heard from John lately since he did this post?

In situations like this in theory we are aware in what we should have to do,but in the real world and of course this is just my personal opinion is just steer clear and move on and enjoy this hobby of ours and not get involved. Some really evil folks in this world that are best left alone ;)

Yea, that was a little risky. Now that it's over, I would ask the police the best way to handle that situation, from their point of view.... I'd like to hear what they have to say.

. Personally, I would of fed the squirrels  look what happened in Brixton, South London-

In the end, their neurons function on the same basis as ours and squirrels are getting hooked on crack cocaine in London, hidden by addicts and dealers in gardens. The rodents are digging up the stashes and eat the powerful drug, which comes in small chunks, neglecting their traditional nut diet.

Several squirrels behaving bizarrely have been observed in Brixton, South London, following a police blitz against cocaine dealers and users, who seem to have chosen to bury their stashes in people's gardens in the streets around Brixton.

"I was chatting with my neighbor who told me that crack users and dealers sometimes use my front garden to hide bits of their stash. An hour earlier I'd seen a squirrel wandering round the garden, digging in the flowerbeds. It looked like it knew what it was looking for. It was ill-looking and its eyes looked bloodshot but it kept on desperately digging. It was almost as if it was trying to find hidden crack rocks." one resident told Life Style Extra.

Other residents too have noticed squirrels turned unusually aggressive.

"We have not had any dealers reporting the theft of their stash by squirrels but the animal is attracted by smell and if it detects something it likes it will dig it up. These animals are big foragers. If a squirrel did open a bag of crack and start consuming it there is no doubt it would die pretty quickly. I suspect that nobody has reported it because they are a wild animal and when they are found dead no-one cares." said RSPCA.

America too would face the issue of the crack squirrels, common in parks where addicts roam in New York and Washington DC, according to Internet legends. The drugged animals are known to be aggressive with the park visitors in their search for a dose.
