Revolutionary War Pistol?

GKMan

Well-known member
Hello All
I found this pistol at a revolutionary war fort. It has an octagonal barrel that is about three inches long and an inside diameter of .45 inches and an overall length of about six and a half inches. Does anyone know what era it might be, and possibly an idea if there would be any makers mark on it?

The second picture looks like it is a percussion cap gun which places it around the 1830's at the earliest although the barrel looks like an older design. I suppose it could have been a flintlock conversion.

Thanks Larry! It was an exciting find..

This is not a match but close enough to give you somewhere to start.

It would be awesome to have a working model. I bet you were thrilled to find it! congrats!

You might want to use electrolysis to get some of the rust off to know for sure what you have. I don't think it would hurt the value any.

Thanks Larry... I cleaned up the barrel some but I was unable to find any markings on it that would be useful. I will try the electrolysis and see what comes of it.

Thanks a lot for those pictures! The two at the top of the second photo has a barrel shape that is remarkably similar to what I found. However what I noticed after I cleaned the one I found up a bit more is that mine has that rectangular section above the trigger and forward of the grip like the flintlock pistol in the picture you submitted.

After I clean it up a bit more I will submit another couple of photos.

Is your barrel made of brass? If so, Wouldn't it be possible to restore it? Of course, anything not brass would have to be stripped out. How sweet would it be to fire a real cannon pistol!? You could load extremely light loads if there are concerns of a weakened barrel.
