Revolutionary War Commission

Thomas Gourley was my 5 Greats (I think) Maternal Grandfather. We don't know much about him. He was born in Ireland and immigrated from Scotland to Lancaster, PA at the age of 16. From what little of his writing we have it is obvious he was well educated. We've known for many years that he served in the Continental Army. Recently my sister found this document commissioning him as a Captain in the Pennsylvania Regiment. He fought in several battles and was at the Valley Forge encampment. He was discharged from the Army in 1781. Veterans were awarded land and he selected his land in Carter County, TN. He died there in 1796 at the age of 44. He apparently suffered from some sort of sickness he contracted during his years of service.

Thought his would make an interesting Memorial Day post.

The date on this is a little hard to read. It is March 3rd, 1777.

from Ireland when a young boy with his family! My dad's grandfather ( my great-grandfather) fought in the Civil War (have info on the battles he helped fight)! May we give thanks to all Verterans and their families for the sacrifices they made for our nation and us! Amen! Ma

...... a minor family curio. Suggest talking to a professional conservator; a local museum might help you find one .

Appears to be in great condition; how was it stored; in a family Bible perhaps ?

I guess I wasn't specific enough. We don't have the actual old document. :( I'd guess it's in some archive storage somewhere. My Sis was able to find it online and download a .jpg of it. We feel fortunate to have that but I'd sure love to have the original though. You can be sure it would be professionally mounted and displayed. Bob
