Pinpointing Problems? This Works For Me.

I have followed this forum for quite some time and I have noticed that the subject of pinpointing has been posted a lot.
One of the methods I use for the 10 1/2" coil is the 90 degree cross. However, I found I needed a reference point.
What I did was place reinforcement labels (the ones that are used for reinforcing the 1/4" holes in notebook paper, for a three ring binder) on top of the coil at the center, where the nub is, to the far edge of the coil at 12 o'clock and 3 ' o clock.
Also a label could be placed at the 9 o' clock position or the sequence reversed depending on which arm you swing with.
After the labels were placed down I used a black, permanent laundry marker to shade inside of the hole.
After the ink was dry I removed the labels.
Instant reference points!
This will give me a reference point at 12 o'clock while I am moving the coil left to right.
After I find the center of the target I pivot the coil, exchanging the 12 o'clock dot with the 3 o'clock dot and slide the coil again left to right.
At this center I stop and dig. The target is usually dead center of the nub.
I realize pinpointing will vary at times due to multiple targets, a coin on edge or near trash. This method has worked well for me when using the 10 1/2" coil.
If any of you find something that will permanently mark the X-8 and X-12, please let me know.
Sorry for the long post.
