respectable day

Spent the day w my DFX er friend and we went to the county fairgrounds for~ 3 hours. I pulled 2 silver dimes, a few wheats and this old lock. How cool when I also found the key a few feet away....wish I would have realized the end was broken or I would have looked for that too. My buddy found a turquoise silver ring and a merc.

The silver quarters sure elude me....can't seem to find them anywhere. Interesting that I am trying to learn to find coins sittin next to garbage or iron. If i try hard enough it seems that I can make any junk sound good from one angle and am starting to learn not to fall for "that ole trick". One of the merc's showed 3 28 and bounced; when I dug I discovered why...it was couched with a pull tab!

I dug ~ 12 pull tab signals in search of a little gold to no avail as everyone was a tab. My buddy found a very large gold ring here a few years ago.

We finished up the day in an old park where I found the LC and dug wheat and clad. At the end of the day, I dug a deeper 3 28 and it turned out to be the merc! Overall good hunt and great wheat/silver ratio.

I really am unaware of the key wheat dates so if anyone knows where there is a list, please let me know. Also, I know nothing of locks but am going to guess this is a common early 1900's or late 1800' mechanism with no value at all. Any info. is always appreciated.

My wife has an electric toothbrush like cleaning tool for the bathroom tile. Although the brush is a bit stiff, it does take the crud off. I WOULD NEVER USE THIS ON ANYTHING OF VALUE, but it is a help for the wheats.

Hi, Nice find on that old lock! I just unearthed one of these clasp type locks a couple weeks ago and have found two other oldies as well last year. Locks can be very collectible and certainly very interesting from an historical viewpoint. By the type of key yours uses I wouldn't be surprised if that one dates between 1800 - 1850, but that's just a guess. Do you think that's the key for that lock? It looks a little big, but those old skelton keys are really interesting too! You might be able to get some more information on that lock by Googling "antique locks." Looks like a great hunt overall! Best, Erik

Anytime you can find Multiple Silver's in a hunt is one positive outing and time well spent. Good Luck and HH to you on your next hunt.:detecting:
