Resisting the urge :nerd:to constantly upgrade!!

After a long time away, I've been bitten by the treasure bug again! For years I had a Fisher 1225X, 1260X, and CZ5 collecting dust in the closet. Once I got the itch again...I dusted off the CZ5, only to find the batteries that were left in her leaked and destroyed the battery contacts. I sipped it to Fisher for repair. While I was waiting on the repair I found a CZ6 on craigslist I couldn't pass up. Then I began to read lots of good things about Tesoro's...I wanted to try for myself, so I just bought a new Vaquero.

Yesterday I used the Vaquero and the CZ5 at a old school yard, and although I found nothing but trash I did get the chance to pit the two against each other..... the verdict is still out on that! Definitely enjoyed the weight of the Vaquero!

Still, I can't help but wonder....should I find new homes for my old stash of detectors and buy the latest and greatest? My wife thinks I'm nuts and she is probably right! Given the technology advancements since the CZ's and the Vaquero's were made, I just can't help but wonder if I'm doing the right thing here.

Similar story as yours. Did a lot of detecting with my old Compas in the 70's then stopped for a bunch of years. Got interested in it again in the 80s and i couldn't find that old Compas. Musta thrown it away or something during one of my many moves. So i bought a back then 'state of the art' Garrett 1000. Found a lot of stuff with that thing but once again i lost interest in detecting until a few years ago. Pulled out the Garrett, charged the batteries and couldn't adjust the threshold tone-broke.
Started researching detectors, bit the $bullet$ and decided on an eTRAC.

One thing about electronic devices, they become obsolete quickly with new technology advancements.
If you got the money, i'd say go for the latest best detector you can afford.

As with any Hobby..........One can spend as much money as they want to for different models , perceived upgrades etc in just about all hobbies.

For example Golf..Wow.all the different brands, all the different specialty clubs ..it's unlimited.Detectors are no different.

Coin hunters, relic hunters, Gold detectors.................all around detectors ..Like I said almost unlimited..........

I suggest you go to a local dealer, or read the Internet offerings on the features.and above all read all the great forums here. You will soon get an idea of what strikes your fancy..

In the last 5 to 10 years there has been some dramatic improvements in detectors...... That said the detectors you have still operate pretty well so you might not need any other purchase to be perfectly happy..

It really is a preference thing on what you use, and what you may or may not like..

Some to look at.Fisher F series, Whites V series, Minelab CTS/ and Etrac models..Garrett At Pro........Teknetics has many models.................. The order I wrote names has no bearing..It was typed as I thought of the brands and detectors...Tesoro is about to release something new shortly too...

Another thing that will help you.Contact the forum sponsors/Dealers..these guys are exceptional in the advice area............... Their all listed at the top of each specific forum and front pages.....

I might suggest that you go on You Tube and look at some different reviews and hunts with the models that interest you. It might give some idea how they compare

Just quit resisting and give in to the urge to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars to find pulltabs and nickles and enjoy. That or go to an alcoholics anonymous meeting and tell them your addiction is ruining your budget. :) I'm on my 3rd detector and am already questioning my sanity. :)

I am a newbie to detecting. Been at it since Aug 2012. I have two detectors, one for dirt and one for water, and of course I wonder if I am getting the best performance for my money.

The urge to try the latest and "Greatest" must run rampant in the detecting community as I see lots of top end machines for sale. Folks buy the high priced machines, use them for a few months, and then sell them. The forums and E-Prey are loaded with them .

I drive my vehicles till the wheels fall off so I doubt that I will be purchasing a new detector any time in the near future. Actually hoping that the two that I have will outlast me.

Hi,
For any metal detector to respond, a target must be buried in the ground.
Waving the coil exactly over this target is/amounts to pure luck.
And luck can not be bought for any amount of money nor with the newest technology.
So even with the most technologicaly advanced detector, you will go home empty handed if luck isn

Yep, plain raw luck can be a factor.
But unlike the throw of the dice, luck in our case is actually finding keepers.
So, can detecting luck or maybe better put, detecting success be increased?

Experience
Knowing where to detect to increase the odds of finding keepers. Add research, research and more research.
Digging iffy targets that would of never of been dug when first starting out detecting.
Completing the detector's learning curve especially with the more complicated machines.
After a while, gut feelings appear out of nowhere to increase keepers.

Location
This is where raw luck can 'appear' to manifest itself. Some live around areas with plenty of old coins still in the ground due to a very low to no population of detectorists in their area.
Those are the real lucky ones.

A decent detector
There is no way a $100 Radio Shack detector is gonna detect a foot deep silver dime.

Just put that CZ 5 up for sale and see how fast it goes. I think if I was going to try another detector I would make a bigger jump than from CZ 5 to a CZ 6. With your CZ5 and the Tesoro you got a pretty set.

I had a CZ5 in the closet when I retired and I thought I needed more, so I sold the CZ5 and bought the newest at the time F75Ltd and hunted it a couple of years and sold it for another and another and just a few weeks ago I bought another F75Ltd and love it. My wife thinks I just about broke even with the sales of my other detectors, pretty good snow job on my part.

I don't think there is a cure for our problem, you may just have to buy a bunch of detectors and then start getting rid of the ones you don't use.

I think if you was to get you a new F70 or F75 you may be okay for a little while.

Just keep in mind what you are finding with what you have, you will be finding the same thing with a new detector.lol:

My F75Ltd finds for today were 3 clad dimes, 5 pennies and a small silver ring, total value maybe .50 cents. Now if I was running my old CZ most likely wouldn't have found near that much, maybe only .45 cents, so you see the F75 was well worth the money.

I think you will find the one or two that really work well for you in your area are the ones you hold on to. And if you do get rid of them you will end up buying them again. Been that way with me and the Sovereign.
Ive been a user of it since they came out, still have and use one, but love to try different detectors.

For me the analog Vaquero is all the technology I need. My White's with VDI is faster when it comes to cherry picking but thats the only advantage I have found.

I have resisted the urge by studying the needs of my sites. In East Texas, there seems to be an abnormally high collection of large iron targets-probably left over from buildings, whatever. The ground is rock hard in most sites and it's hard to find an area where stuff would have a chance to sink. So, depth is not my concern at this time. HOWEVER, I'm considering an in-between machine that is deeper than the beginner models but not so deep that I just keep getting these huge targets. And trash is a concern. So I guess I'm saying study your area and then decide.

And here I am AGAIN! Me too. I got hooked on that Diggers show and just had to go hunting again. Pulled out the trusty ol Bandido II uMax and went on a couple hunts. Didnt find anything great the the bug is back. Now im watching videos about that new Garrett AT Pro...I keep telling myself to stop it....get another coil...just dont buy a new one yet...not yet...

You hear a lot of opinions on this subject, BUT with hard cold facts and data like this it's a no-brainer..... Upgrade!

I used to be the same way, more worried about upgrading and wondering what goodies I was passing right over. Ever since I got my Etrac I can focus on the actual researching and detecting and not worrying about missing stuff or having to upgrade.
