resetting the processor [?]

Hi all,
Well shook the dust off the big E1 tonight and got out for a couple of hours. Only a couple of Wheats and an early George penny but it was great to be outside!
I remembered Charles post about resetting the processor [was having some problems at the end of last season] and decided to try popping the battery out during startup. Now when I last used it [last fall] I must have had it in Iron Mask as that is what it was set on when I first hit the field. I did the battery pull but figured that the reset would reset it back to factory presets. Did I do it wrong? Or does it just reset some internal data and leave the settings the same? Just curious...
Thanks and happy hunting..
Tom

Did you notice any improvement when you restarted it. I've been thinking about doing it myself. You have to do it before it comes all the way on right???

Hi Chuck,
I didn't notice any great improvement but then again because the settings didn't reset back to factory defaults, I didn't know if I was doing it at the right time or not.
I did it about 3 times:

Just when it boots up and makes that melodic diddleee dee
When the display gives the version number
As soon as the display lit up and I heard it make a sound.

I left the battery out for about 2 minutes each time then went back to detecting. Still unsure if I did it right,I then started to tweak the settings [my own worst enemy ] so who knows. I'm heading out again today for a few hours but am going to pour over this forum and heed some of the guys advice.
Was wondering if maybe holding the power button in while removing the battery at start up is the key?????
Let me know if you notice any improvement after doing it, Chuck

Thanks Tom, I don't know if I need to try it or not. I don't seem to have any problems. I'm kind of thinking like If it ain't broke don't fix it.
I had a White's Eagle Spectrum that would go crazy every once in a while and doing the reboot would always straighten that out but so far so good with the Explorer and I seem to be getting good depth so I don't think I'll do it right now. When I do I'll post the results though.

OK guys, how do you actually reset the processor, ive read the posts here, maybe one of the experts can post how to actually do it, not these maybe this will work idea. PLEASE

Hi Tom,
Well I decided to do the reboot but I didn't see any difference at all on my airtest. I only checked a quarter and got 9" maximum in just about all settings. This was in my cellar so I kept the sensitivity at about 20. Maybe outside with higher sensitivity I would have done better. No increase in IM. 9" is exactly what I got before the reboot and that's kind of weak. At 8" I get a good strong signal the same as before the reboot. I did the reboot as the screens were changing and it was fluting

Hi Chuck,
I've only been out a couple of times so far but haven't really noticed much difference either. I guess there wasn't much wrong with it before I did it...which could only mean one thing... it's the 'processor twixt the phone cups' as someone recently put it. I did get my first silver of the year yesterday - 1910 Barber dime in pretty nice shape and it gave a great signal, bout 7 or 8 inches. Not too many signals in the area I was hunting but the machine seemed pretty stable and I had the sensitivity up around 25 manual [which I don't usually do]. I don't put too much stock in air tests and only did them initially to see what the different coins sounds were like.
Well glad yer machine is ok and hope it does right by ya... I'm off after some relics...
