Research Tips anyone?

Ted (KCK) had an excellent post, now a few pages back, where he must've listed a hundred potential spots that most any town will have many of nearby.

Does your town have a newspaper that keeps old copies for reading? Local library? Any town our county histories written? You're looking for annual events, revivals, outdoor sports area, swimming holes, sledding and skating spots. Retirement homes, go play a game of chess and ask what they used to do for fun and where those places were. Don't pry, just make conversation and you'll get a greater reward just from hearing those great stories and making a friend than any old coin might provide by itself. maybe they still keep the old family property and could give permission to hunt there.

Drive-in movies, burger joints, old parking lots. Vacant files maybe once held homes or stores, churches or schoolhouses.

Once you start in this vein, you'll never go dry for a new place to hunt.

I have photos of an old ski jump that nobody knows ever existed. It was popular in the 1930's. I knew the photographer, by then in his 90's, and he couldn't recall where it was. I think I know about where it is. Imagine the finds!

It's on page 5 at the moment, titled "The first place I'm gonna hunt..." or something similar:

If you're in the north eastern part of the US... Maptech at http://historical.maptech.com/index.cfm?CFID=682331&CFTOKEN=51628076 has some historical maps at the link. There are alot of old schools that no longer exist in my area. If you use OziExplorer and GPS with those maps you can find sites that used to have houses there. I've found quite a few sites using the maptech/OziExplorer/GPS combo... :)
