Hello all. I found something recently that has really been frustrating me. Normally when I find something I can type a few words into the old google machine and it pops right up.

The item I found is an old religious medal. So I do know what it is, but dating and establishing a country of origin has been a nightmare. I have a few emails out to people, still waiting on the responses.

Most religious medals I have found and have seen others find are made of 2 metals. Aluminum and more rare, silver. The one I dug recently is made out of copper, brass or pewter. Does pewter turn green?

Anyways. This item was found along a river that was first traveled by the Jesuits in the early 1600s and later explorers also were in the area of that this was found.

When I dug it it was in a big "coin ball" of dirt under a thick tree root about 9 inches down.

The problem is I think that there is and was so much religious stuff produced and distributed that it might be impossible to get much more information on it.

The closest I have come to dating it is a picture I found online of one very similar from the 16th century.

Would you just give up or would you keep looking. Does anyone know of anyone who studies/collects this type of thing who may be able to shed more light on it?

Thanks. :)

We have some very knowledgeable people here. Post a picture and see if someone can be of assistance in the identification.

Yes I would keep searching.. You may have found a true relic worth knowing it's history..
