HI,
I am trying to hunt a highschool that was closed in the seventies after forty years. The bleachers are metal and over grass and dirt. It seems the coins there are most all silver and buried six to eight inches in red clay. The Metal bracings are really messing up my hunting. Any one help me on this one? I need settings and technics. I reall appreciate all the help.
Thank you

To be honest the Explorer is not the best detector for this kind of hunting, you need a low power detector (for lack of better words). I have tried using the Explorer around playground equipment and have not had much luck. That said, if the Explorer is the only detector you own, about the only way I was able to use the Explorer to some satisfaction around playground equipment was to use the X-5 coil from SunRay and turn sensitivity down to around 3. This way you can detect as close as 6 inches from steel posts. I use a Shadow X2 for playgrounds. Don

Its tough hunting near steel, the only thuing I can suggest is use a smaller coil,(the oval Joey may be a good choice for this) use low sens in manual less than 10.. and approach the metal from the front... in other words face the bleachers and dont hunt parallel to them...

Thank you guys I knew you would come through! This makes perfectly good sense. Great site and great people...Have a great day

This sounds ridiculous at first thought, but I wonder how the X-1 probe would work in such a situation. The areas under bleachers must have a lot of goodies hiding between the tons of tabs and other junk. I know of one old bleacher dating back to the 1800s where I've tried searching with small loops and reduced sensitivty, but with very little success. These bleachers cover a small enough area that searching with the X-1 probe and its 3" range might not be so ridiculous. <IMG SRC="/forums/images/smile.gif" BORDER=0 ALT=":)">

do search alot of bleachers around my area and use the sunray 5. you can get really close to the frame work before you get the overload.
