My Uncle Charles War Experences

My hat is off to your uncle, as he had to be one tough
soldier just to be able to do the job, much less survive.
Perspective can be a funny thing. You talk to the infantry, and the last thing they wanted to be was someone flying in bomber command. You talk to the people in the bombers, and the last thing they wanted to be was a rifleman, on the ground. Irony......

Were would we be today if not for brave men like your uncle?Men of his generation are quickly dying off.Soon they will all be gone.We owe these heros a huge debt.

we are so fortunate to have such great heroes in our families, this way they are not forgotten, Thanks Royal!

a couple years ago when my mother gave me that story that was printed in the Ludington Press, where he lived. He died of Cancer last year.

Your uncle sounds like a real hero, in every sense of the word. Hero is too loosely used these days [sports hero, movie hero, etc] This man shows what a real hero is. We all should thank those men.
All the best

It held my attention and I read it twice, may read it again later tonight. Thanks for posting this story, I really enjoyed it. Please have a great day! Kelley (Texas)

Imagine surviving one of those missions, and then goingout on 34 more! WOW! Your uncle was a brave man, I probably would have crapped myself. Don't know if I would have gotten in for another trip. Thanks for the look see into his life!

who had never read it. It must have been before my time on the forum. I would be terrified flying airplanes or even having to ride in one during war time. Some things have changed, particularly when it comes to where women can work! Seems we are allowed to do most anything if we choose to tackle it.
But mothers and wives still worry when their husbands and sons go off to war! I know there are several families I know right now, waiting and praying for their soldiers to come home safely!
And here I am, with a gung-ho son, in VMI, that just cannot wait to graduate and eventually go to Iraq. He has no idea how disturbing this is to his father and me. I have to look at it in another way sometimes, because if we didn't have the soldiers we have now, and in past wars, which include many on this forum, I might not be able to sit here and enjoy my life!
Thanks for posting this again. It gives me a view of something I have never heard much about from the people who lived these experiences.

lived through, then succumb to cancer. I bet there are other family members who remember more. I bet your mother has some good ones as well! From what you have told us, she's a real character in her own right!
