replacing lcd screen

Eric

New member
I recieved my gta 1000 and its in great shape. There is only something wrong with the screen and I want a new one. I can get one from Garrett for less than $41. But is it easy to do it yourself? Anyone did it before?

Thanks, Eric.

Man, I wouldn't know the first thing to do. Sorry to see that there's something wrong with the LCD screen. That sux. If I was you I'd look for a local dealer or somebody that works on metal detectors to get it replaced. Me? I'd just send it in to Garrett's for service, but I'm here in The States. I would'nt even want to calculate shipping from Holland.:(
Best of luck to ya. I hope ya get it fixed. That GTA 1000 is a really neat machine.:detecting:Happy Hunting!:)

If it's a plug in connector it should be fairly easy. If it's soldered, well, I wouldn't try it, but that's with my hands. :surrender:

Metalhead, yeah the screen sucks a bit but it is a beautiful machine anyway. It has not much use and have no idea the screen looks like this. It works but all the non operational info shines through. I will add a picture. I used it in the woods last weekend and it did a great job. I love that 5x10 coil! Brad from Garrett assured me that it isn't that hard to replace it. If not, I have a detector repair proffesional 30 minutes from here.

Thanks John, I better take a careful look at it first. When It scares me, I will have somebody do it for me:unsure:

Anything that costs as mcuh as these units do goes
to the Pros for repair ..same as my rifles etc etc

I can't speak for anybody, but myself. I tackle it in a minute. It actually takes longer to get the unit apart, than it does to replace the screen. Obviously, you need the correct tools, and if you don't, then drive the 30 miles.

I would send it in and have Garrett do it. They can calibrate it too.

Eric, looks like your display (liquid crystal display) has suffered from burn in. If that is what has happened it is a phenomenon common on the earlier and later versions of LCD displays for motorcycles that are always parked in the sun. Easy to prevent by keeping it out of direct sunlight but I don't know of any way to fix it other than replacing it. Perhaps it was left in a vehicle?

I have no idea, the detector is in very good condition with apparently little use, the white lower rod however, is colored darker now. I just got it recently and have no info on the history.

HH, Eric.

I've had a couple GTA 1000s with the same LCD problems. The last one I had was sent to Garrett. They replaced the LCD,re-calibrated it and added a diode to the circuit board to prevent it from getting fried if the batteries were installed incorrectly. I really think that AGE plays a role in the LCD fading out. I could be wrong, but the older GTA units I had were made in the early 1990s.
Here is a few pics of other faded LCDs.

Thanks Straker to share the pictures and info. The LCD screen on the right looks like mine!

Eric.

The one on the right isn't even turned on! Talk about ghost imaging! I haven't seen any of the newer Garretts with this problem. The GTAX units made after the 1000 powermaster. I forgot to mention that Garrett charged me a 'C' note for all the repairs and shipping. They also replaced the touchpads and meter face lense/decal. These old garretts get stiff touchpads.
The only Garrett I have now is the GTI 2000.

I'm an amateur radio operator, and I have a fairly extensive set of tools, including ones to work on surface mounted devices, and an anti-static bench setup.

You don't need all of this to replace the LCD, but you do need a few simple hand tools.
