I had a very disappointing day today!!
Went out with a buddy with a sovereign He was banging on clad and silver. And a large cent not American.
I ended up with a clad quarter and 5 lincoln M. and didn

would recommend trying a less trashy area, ballfields usually don't have too many pulltabs. It is true that trash near coins can cause beeps to be less than 100% repeatable, but I wouldn't dig anything that only beeped once. HH, George (MN)

I'm not an expert but some here are and I'm sure they will help you. I do know however that either you need some different settings or your unit has a problem and I'd bet on the settings or technique.

There was alot of trash. how do I pick through it? Will it give just beeps or will you get a steady hit on the coin?
I am running Iron mask -10 with sens 20 gain 6
I thought I was starting to get the hang of it till today seams like every place I sweep has trash all over. And the explorer is just singing out all kinds of signals.
I have tried running discrimination but all that does is stop the pull tabs. and i cant get any signals to repeat unless they are within a inch or two of the surface.
tried making a test garden and cant hit anything over 4" no matter what settings I use.And I have tried alot of them
I will keep trying to figure this explorer out But from now on I am taking my soverign. To cool off
Thanks for the Help

Hey Clark,
It sounds like you want to know what coin hits sound like. It also sounds like you may be trying to detect in trashy ground. If you switch to Mike Moutray's settings, I can help you. Those are the settings I am familiar with. Mike Moutray's settings are found on this forum and on http://groups.msn.com/MinelabExplorerXSusers site.
You need to make sure the threshold sound is turned on so you can hear it.
In trashy areas, I set my Sensitivity on manual. Then I lower it until I can get a little bit of intermittant threshold return in between some targets. You do not want your threshold to be gone all of the time. If it is gone all of the time, you are probably getting a depth of 1". If all you hear is silence, that means that the trash targets that you are discriminating out are distracting your search coil from deeper coins. If you turn your sensitivity down to 15, the area of influence of the shallow trash targets decreases and helps you to look in between targets more and get better depth. In super trashy areas, you need to double sweep 4" lengths with little quick sweeps. If you don't, you will pass over coins.
You need to do some air tests and listen to coins by themselves. Place different coins on clean ground and sweep over them at different altitudes. You will be able to hear the difference between shallow and deeper coin hits.

... like a year, to learn how to hunt the trash. And I guess I'm still learning because I keep pulling stuff out of the same places. If you know what a deep coin signal sounds like, then what you are looking for in trash are parts of that signal - a coin signal that's starting but gets cut off by a pulltab - a coin signal that's just tinkling through a barrage of foil and chopped up aluminum - a signal in iron that's wide enough to suggest it's a coin and not iron falsing, etc. Someone could write a book on it. I don't think the Sov is superior to the Exp in trash, instead, I think the Sov will give a more positive signal on coins in trash and a pro will be able to tell the difference between a coin and trash. The Explorer will just throw it all at you and let you sort it out.
What are you doing wrong? Well, the right settings will help you out some but I can still find stuff in trash if I forget to change my settings. They help at the margin. I think you just need some more practice and soon you will be able to at least match your buddies Sov finds.

Hey Clark,
If you are a beginner, it is better to practice in non-trashy areas, and then progress to trashier. Also you need to be using the 7.5" search coil because it does a great job of separating out trash signals if you use the sweep style I told you about.
In less trashy areas, you do not need to use that double-sweep every 4 inch style. But don't haul @ss like with a White's either. Practice your sweep speed by placing a coin on clean ground and see which speed the coin reacts the most to. Just do one single sweep when you are testing the coin. Notice that if you go too fast, the response is minimized. If you go too slow, the response is minimized.
Another sweep style is the "wiggle". Use this to get your target to respond better once you know it is there. Place the middle plastic member of the coil directly over the target and do rapid 4 inch right/left sweeps. THis should get the best response from the target so you can make a better decision whether to dig or not.

Hey Clark,
You have to make sure that test garden is trash free. If your machine is nulling out while you are in your test garden, then the ground there is not clean.
Put your machine in iron mask = -16 so that it will be accepting all metals. Then use this setting to find a clean piece of ground using your machine. Then place a silver quarter on the ground. Put your machine back onto your original settings and set the sensitivity to manual. Now select a sensitivity of 27. Sweep over the quarter. You should be able to get a strong warbling response up to 8 inches, and then a broken warbling response from 9 to 10". If you still cannot get past 4 inches, you may have to return your XS to the maker. I hope your air test works!
Mike

I guess i didnt check to see if it was trash free I will give it a try and let you know
Thanks Darryl

Thank you for the help
I will try Mike Moutray's settings and let you know what I come up with Thank you I will be in touch

Thanks for the advice I am only two weeks old with the explorer and working had to figure it out.
I know with all the help I am getting on this site I should be able to manage
Thanks allot
Darryl

you really need to sell your sovereign or lock it away where you can't get to it! when i switched from sov to explorer i was one sad jose at first. if i had kept the sov i would never have learned the sounds of the explorer because they are NOT similar! i was crying the blues and missing my sov. now i don't miss it any more. the explorer is a more capable machine in so many ways - its best asset is the adjustable iron mask. assuming your machine isn't faulty, you just need to give it a lot of dedicated time... it will soon begin to speak to you! <img src="/metal/html/smile.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":)"> hh.

I think I will keep working with the explorer.Me wanting to take the soverign is just frustration. But I am getting allot of good advice and things are looking up.
My last hunt I was in trashy trashy ground and my sensitivity was way to high for the conditions.
I am learning slowly But the plus is I am learning
Explorer or bust
