Repairing coil cable?

dave wilcox

New member
Hi All,

I am looking for some advice regarding repairing the outer cable for my Excal 1000. If you have a look at the attached picture you will see my problem.

Is it repairable or will it need to go back to Minelab?

I would appreciate your comments.

Thank you

Dave :ukflag:

Is the copper wire exposed? (Can't tell from the photo.)

Do you use it in the water? How deep?

Has water gotten in the damaged wire?

Is the signal affected by the damage?

Each of these questions is important for deciding how to proceed!

Also, posting on the "Modifications Forum" will get you a lot of excellent information.

Do you use it in the water? How deep? Very occasionally but only in shallow water (1 foot deep)

Has water gotten in the damaged wire? No

Is the signal affected by the damage? No

Like CJ said, it depends on if there was damage caused by the leak. Water can run under the outer covering and get into the coil and the control housing.

I've used this 3M 06147 tape for sealing a headphone splice on my old original Excalibur and it never leaked. I also used it on my boat trailer wiring. The stuff is a black vinyl tape with a black gooey substance on one side. It really seals tight.

Hi i had same problem as you before and i put Liquid Tape ( sold in Home Depot) to seal the crack then after i taped it again with electric tape. If you only use electric tape water will be able to come through the tape to the wires.
