Repair vs. New

Wondering if I could get some advice/opinions from some of the members here.

I was given a GTA1000 with a Crossfire Supreme Deepseeker coil about 8-10 yrs ago as a gift from my wife. I found lots of nails and other junk but not much else. For some reason (not batteries) it malfunctioned and it has been in storage for maybe 7yrs. I have no idea what is wrong with it.

After reading many of your posts, it seems that a number of you are happy with the Ace250. I'm wanting to get back in the hobby with a new determination of finding at least a penny or two. I'm not sure if I should have the GTA1000 repaired or just buy a new one. Is the GTA1000 a good detector for a total amateur or has the technology advanced in the last 10 years to the point where this metal detector is obsolete? I would like to stick to the Garrett products.

Thanks a lot for your opinions.

The GTA 1000 was and is still a good detector. With that being said ! As far as repair goes you would just about have as much money in the repair ( if Garrett would even repair it being that old ) then you would getting the ACE 250. You'll get even a little better depth and better upgraded electronics with the 250.
I don't think you'll go wrong with the Ace. Check out all the finds that have been made with it here on the forum.

If it's the 1000 with Power Master it's still a good machine. You should have sent it in when it first malfunctioned when it was still under warranty. Have you checked all the connections and battery terminals? You can contact Mary Penson at Garrett ( maryp@garrett.com ) and get an idea of what it might cost to fix it. They might even fix it for nothing. Otherwise you can't go wrong with a 250.

$200.00 or more for repair work seems to be a high estimate! Get it repaired even if you do decide to get a Ace 250! Contact www.brokendetector.com..............................................................HH.........................Joe

I sent in a 1000 that I bought off ebay to Garrett 2 yrs. ago that had been in a garage in Florida for several years and was shot, or so I thought. The screen was a washout and corrosion was everywhere. Cost $80 total to fix it, now it runs sweet and smooth, can't beat that!!
