Removing control knob on Excal 1000 blue headphone model

Hello People,

I searched old messages for information on this but found little. I remember it being here somewhere though.

Question:
The disc/all metal knob on my Excal 1000 does not always click in when turning from AM to disc. I took the yellow cookie out of the top of the knob but the nut has a thick coating of oxidation on it (hairy) blue white in color. What is the best way to approach removing the knob under these conditions with out risking problems? Can I use penetrating oil on it ? Or?

Thanks in advance.
