Remote ring and mouth full o'gold

A windy and cold trip today to the deserts of SoCal. I found the gold crown at a sandy pullout in a wash where I parked my car! The ring [marked 925, but looks like 979] came a couple of hours later upstream in a canyon, about three miles away, underneath some cottonwood and sycamore trees. The ring surprised me more than the crown, as I was in the middle of nowhere. I was tromping around a canyon apparently used as an old mail route in the 1800s and was hoping for older treasure, but I'll take a ring any day!

Think of how long those trees have been there and how many people have kicked it under them in the summer to cool off. Thinking like that is called reading an area. Those are some cool finds. Hope you find more treasure there.

One never knows where treaure lurks. Nice finds. I've got a couple of crowns like that. Found one years ago on a river gravel bar when I was field testing Tesoro's Diablo gold detector. Found it next to a gold nugget earring, which presented a mystery. Did one person lose both while either looking for their crown or the nugget earring or were they lost by two different people..

Bill[/quote]Or did someone get beat up and lose a tooth...and an earring.

Possible but a gravel bar is a strange place for an arse kicking. They could have been lost while the bar was under water. In the winter this is a fast moving stream.

Oh no. Something else to put on my to find list. Very cool!

Yup, I *love* big old trees in the middle of nowhere! Right now, I'm reading "Up and Down California in 1860-1864: The Journal of William H. Brewer". He was part of a geological survey team that was led by Whitney (of Mt. Whitney fame). Anyway, I mention this book for two reasons: it is a great read and the emphasis on finding shady campsites really makes you gravitate towards big trees when you're detecting. Thanks for all the comments folks. - Jim
