Watch out for those more valuable coins that look like junk. Here's 4 quarters that I dug at one site, all looking similar.

I always keep an eye out for the good stuff... Silver I've found in the wet sand is black, not rusty looking like clad. In the dry sand, it's dark but "hazy" looking. So far, every silver I've dug out of the dirt looks the same way it did when it was dropped. Just beautiful. :)

Those are hard to do. Sometimes I soak them in olive oil for several days, picking at them with a tooth pick each day. If they are valuable at all it is worth the time. Sometimes I get a lot off with muriatic acid, dipping just seconds at a time & washing with water. Then working the rest off carefully. Steve
 
See below answer plus if it is valuable - by carefully checking the date & mint mark - then let the buyer clean it. I have taken up to 6 weeks cleaning coins & tokens. Steve
