Harold William "Zeke" Schetzle, 57, master guide, died July 8, 2006, at Providence Alaska Medical Center as a result of an accident while gold dredging in Nome.
A service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Fort Richardson National Cemetery. An escort to the cemetery will begin at 1:45 p.m. from the Arctic Valley Main Gate at Fort Richardson. After the service, he will be taken to his wilderness escape, "Jimmy Lake," near Lake Louise. Honorary pallbearers are Karl Braendel, Eric Braendel, Don Kann, Rod Arno, Steve Pirtle, Chuck Orr, Brian DeMarco, Hiram Newcomer and Alaska's Professional Guides.
Mr. Schetzle was born Sept. 1, 1948, in Lewiston, Idaho, to Daisy and Denzil Schetzle. He moved to Alaska in 1956. He graduated from Chugiak High School in 1966, then joined the Navy and served during the Vietnam War.
He owned and operated the Kichatna Guide Service for 31 years after serving in the military. As a master guide, he hunted Kodiak Island, the Alaska Range and the Brooks Range; he enjoyed hunting, fishing, trapping, metal detecting, gold mining, journaling and writing.
He authored two books, "The Alaska Wilderness Hunter" and "Alaska Safari." He also wrote several articles for Alaska Magazine, The Western Horseman, Field & Stream, The Ruralite, The American Hunter, Gray's Sporting Journal, Bird Watchers Digest, Fur-Fish-Game, and the NRA Deer Hunting Guide.
Mr. Schetzle is survived by his wife, Glo Schetzle; daughters and sons-in-law, Kichana and Bill Grady and Shannon and Ronnie Cross; granddaughter, Chrisana Cross; brothers and spouses, Brian and Marsha Schetzle and Randy and Trina Schetzle; niece, Chelsea Schetzle; father-in-law, William (Barricks) Fawcett; and brother-in-law, Gerald Fawcett.
He had been looking forward to the birth of his grandson, Logan Zeke Grady.
He was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Dominic Martini; brother-in-law, Jimmy Fawcett; and parents.
