Relics Mode

Here's a question. If Relics Mode is'nt detecting junk, then what is it detecting? With all the scrap iron buried in my yard, in relics mode I can see it on the screen. But what is the detector going to find otherwise? Is'nt it the same as being in coins or custom mode? Bit confused..

Your always going to find junk, even in relic mode.
If you had it in all metal (non-discrimination) you'd pick up everything in the ground.
By putting the discrimination knob slightly above nails you're going to x out a lot of
iron but still, you'll get some and you'll still be hitting on jewlery and coins. Relic mode
means just what it says; you'll be looking for stuff that may or may not reflect the history of the
area.
>If Relics Mode is'nt detecting junk<..........

The machine has no idea/conception of junk and non junk. All it's program can do
is give it's best guess as to what kind of metal the target is made of. It might be a horse shoe,
of which I have found many, or just a discarded piece of metal.

Many metals will have a conductivity close to gold, jewlery, and coins. The target reading will also
depend on the depth. Yesterday I kept getting readings of zinc penny and nickel but found only
pieces of Aluminum and other junk metal because the conductivity was close to what the TARGET ID said it was.

Also whats junk to one person may be valuable to someone else, like an old token for example.

Dig everything because an old junk can may have someone's money cache inside. You just never know.
See Garrett's book on Treasure Caches.

Don't believe all the hype about expensive metal metal detectors being able to tell you
EXACTLY whats in the ground. They can't do that. If they did non of us would be digging all that junk
we are so familiar with.

> If Relics Mode is'nt detecting junk, then what is it detecting?< If you have coins buried in yoour yard it will find them
buut you'll have to dig everything. If the coins and other valuable stuff is there, your machine will detect it. It CAN'T detect
what isn't there.

Good Luck and happy huinting

Thanks. I've got finding coins nailed down...except for nickels. Seems like every time it comes up a nickel, it turns out to be foil or a tack. So I have the 5 cent turned off. Maybe I should turn it back on and dig it up anyways..

The key word in metal detector is "METAL". They are all designed to find it no matter what shape it may take. A detector can't see the target anymore than you can see it so it must make an educated guess as to what it might be. No detector made can accurately tell exactly what is in the ground. It can only offer a probability. The only 100% accurate discriminator is your digging tool. It never fails.

You'll miss gold and rings with nickel turned off. Many rings fall into the nickel/tab range. If you want gold you'll have to dig junk to find it because that's where it hides.
