Relics in Central Georgia!!

Haven't found them yet but sure have been looking.:)

Went out today to a old fort site that was active prior to the Civil War. Around 1807 was the activity here and close to a major river. So far I have found some shotgun shells that have solid metal in place of were the plastic is today. Also nails and such.

Curious if you guys think this site is worth more investigation? 2 trips so far and just the shells and some center-fire smaller caliper cases.

Really been wanting to check out the Balls Ferry area as it keeps coming up in my research. Have gone once but was really limited in my time. Google Earth shows what appears to be the old roadbed crossing the river there approx 1/4 mile downstream.

Research is 90% of finding relics. The remaining 10% will depend on having the best detector for the job and mastering its use. Never give up on old sites. Most likely it has been hit hard over the years but there will be relics left. Either deep or in high trash areas. Keep working that site, especially during the late winter when snakes (you have some huge rattlers), ticks/chiggers, poison ivy and the heat are gone. Make sure Deer season is not going on or the property is leased by a hunting club and wear blaze orange even during Turkey season.

Yes, I was covered in ticks after the last outing. Just can't stop until I find what I'm looking for, then it will probably get worse.

I check myself well after and try to get them before they "dig in".

Thanks for the info and encouragement. I'm all over it but am still learning to PROPERLY use the detector.

Can't wait to post my first finds!

WOW! Will not be going back to that spot till winter. I have lived in the south all my life and NEVER had so many ticks on me as I did yesterday. Still found some today.

Found a couple of items that I need to take photos of so maybe you guys can help me identify them. Will post them up tomorrow.

Man did I luck up!! Been meaning to ask this fella at work that does Civil War reenacting if he knew where any campsites were. Turns out, he lives on a peice of property that has been in the family since the late 1700's. Actually was a town prior to Sherman's March to the Sea. They came through and burned most of the town and the leather tannery. Commissary and smokehouse along with his and his father's house are still standing. Commissary has beautiful, decorative pigeon holes in the eve. Apparently they would roost there and when a costumer would come in wanting one, they would go up, slide out the back of the hole and grab one. Ya'll might have known that but it was news to me.

Anyway, several hundred acres with confirmed campsites, a demolished tannery, old homesites and even a town square. The tannery was destroyed as it supplied a good portion of the Confederate's leather goods.

Cant wait to get started!!

Hi jham,I live in south Ga.You might trying to duct taping your pants legs they gotta go up on the outside you can see the ticks and then brush them off.......HH........Dan

Thanks Dan.:)

I just cannot go back to that spot until winter. Cool thing about the new spot is that its all open field or yard type grass. At least that's in the spots I have hunted so far. Its flipping 300 acres a lot of which was inhabited by the townsfolk. I really cant see me going anywhere else for a WHILE.

Couple of pretty nice finds (for me at least) so far. Ill post up some pics in a new post.

Best,
Jamie
