This came from the site of an Indian trading post that is on private property. About 2000 soldiers camped on the same site during the Civil War. I believe from records the trading post was constructed in about 1790 or so. It was no longer there by around 1830 to 1840.
At first I thought this was a hay hook but then realized the hook would be at 90 degrees to the handle. I think it is an ice hook but am not sure. The handle has a hole that runs all the way through. I have also considered a meat hook so someone might know and help with this one.
Anyhow, this was found at about at about 15 inches or so. I think that is about as far as you can go on these type of relics. I have started to be much more interested in relic hunting than in the past and have found a large number of mini balls, round balls, and other relics from the site. This was a situation where IM-16 is the only way to hunt 99% of the time. Unless I am hunting with the left side of the screen black, all ferrous rejected, I have found ferrous works best for me.
There are very good reasons for knowing what settings to use and what they do even if we use only a few most of the time.
I will post some photos that show what happens with Noise cancel and Semi-auto and Manual setting. In doing so I am not promoting any method over others. There are too many variables, as far as I am concerned, for me to promote any specific setting. I try to post in a way that it is clear that the settings and/or programs I use are nothing more than something to consider.

I'm can't tell how big your artifact is but is it too big to be a hoof pick ?? I've got a post-war one around here that looks an awful lot like that.

I would say that is just about the right size and it was found where there would have been a lot of horses. It fits very nice in ones hand. Thanks, I never gave that a thought.
