Relic Tips for Gold Country

Lodihunter

New member
Hi Everyone...

I'm taking my dad out hunting tomorrow down highway 49 through the gold country here in CA. Unfortunately, I have only used C/J mode because I haven't really hit up anywhere that is considered too old. If I'm hunting an old foundation or mining camp, I'm guessing that Relic mode would be the best bet. I have read the manual on it but wanted to shoot out a quick message to all of you MXT users to see if you all have any tricks up your sleeves for a "Relic Rookie". Any help is appreciated. By the way, if I find a 10 pound nugget, I'll chip y'all off a piece just for helpin.

If you're only comfortable and used to C/J mode then there's no reason you can't hunt a "relic" site in it. Just realize that you are looking for targets that may come in a lot lower on the VDI scale than you may usually consider "good". Cherrypicking the high VDI's can miss you some great finds. If you do try relic mode I would recommend "alternate" relic mode (w/the trigger forward on the regular MXT). If you're running the MXT Pro, the 1-tone relic mode is identical. Hope that helps . . . good luck.

It will depend a lot on the ground mineralization of where you are detecting. If it's not too mineralized, Relic or C/J could be fine. If the ground is hot, you may need to use Prospecting mode and crank the SAT up. Most of all, have fun!

UPDATE:

We had a great time checking out all of the little gold towns throughout the mother lode. The soil was at about 83 so it made it a little tricky but we managed to find some stuff. Additionally, all of the old foundations and historic stuff is on private property so we were VERY limited in what we could hunt. In Hornitos, however, there is a little park in the middle of town that has been there since the 1800's. We found a little musket ball about 9 inches below some cobble stone that was buried in the park. At the same place, we found a gold pendant at about 6 inches that came up at 4 VDI. MY FIRST GOLD!!!! WOOHOO!! After hunting in Hornitos, we decided to cruise up highway 49 and had a great time looking at all of the old buildings. It was frustrating seeing all of these old sites knowing that we couldn't dig them. After some driving, we ended up in Knights Ferry. It's a big covered bridge on your way to Yosemite. We broke out the MD and started hunting around the area. That is when we found this old YALE & TOWNE lock. I am guessing it is late 19th century but can't tell for sure. I was hoping that someone could lend me a hand by giving me some information on it. What a great day!
