Relic Settings

So, what settings do you use for relic hunting in good soil? I had a X50
last year and sold it like a dummy. I have the 70 now and want to use it for relics. I just have to get use to the "more features" on the 70.

Thanks,

Although I am not specifically a relic hunter, I would set mine just like I do for coins. All metal and ignore the stuff (via tones and TID) that I don't want. My suggestion would be to take some "samples" of relics you have found, pass them under the coil and take note of the sound and TID of the "keepers". For information on setting the Noise Cancel, Sensitivity, GB etc, go to the FAQFAQ listing at the top of this forum and find the one for X-70. In addition, there are lots of good posts to this forum, from lots of knowlegeable folks. Just do a search for the topic you are wanting to learn more about. And, if you have any specific questions, don't hesitate to ask.

The X-70 will hunt very similarly to the X-50. However, I really like the narrower notch segments and Threshold tone offered by the X-70. And, I can't deny that I find the Auto GB, Auto NC and Prospecting mode (for target sizing) very useful as well. HH Randy

I only hunt relics and do it in the Coin and Treasure Mode, modified Pattern 1, rejecting only the first two ferrous segments and the last nonferrous segment, which will regect most iron nails and mineralized "hot" rocks. Two tones, slight threshold, sensitivity 25 (but could probably go a little higher on the sensitivity).

My clay based ground balances between 13 and 25. I don't know if that would be considered moderate or bad.

I dig all high tone, positive reading targets in two directions (0 degree sweep and 90 degree sweep) regardless of how jumpy the numbers are. Occasionally I dig a slightly negative reading target in one direction, if I have a good feeling about it. This will usually be a larger but interesting iron object but relics is what I'm after, even if it's iron. I'm really only interested in avoiding iron nails.

I really haven't hunted much in the prospecting mode yet, but I'm sure it will do good with the iron mask turned up to avoid iron nails, if it has that much rejection. I do use the prospecting mode for sizing and shaping occasionally and even for pinpointing sometimes. It does a great job at separating targets spaced close together.

I think the X-terra 70 is underrated in its relic hunting abilities because on that other forums "relic shootouts", I never see pictures of them using X-terra's. Maybe they just don't know what they're missing.

what they are missing with those other detectors. Just leaves more for we X-Terra users.

Thanks for sharing the settings you use while relic hunting. Other than the number of tones and your use of the Pattern mode, your relic technique sounds similar to my coin hunting. HH Randy

2 tones as Phil said is the way to go. Most relics are not round like coins. Using the multi tones can give an indistinct audio response on some irregularly shaped non-ferrous targets. It seems that when the 70 sees targets that due to their shape give a varying reading when swept across the audio is not fast enough to give two clear tones, the result being a broken or clipped type audio response.

Tracking on works best for seeing non-ferrous co-located with small to medium size iron.

Thanks guys, I'll give it a go on your advise. I did not relic hunt much with the 50,as it was too jumpy on the TID. Maybe I'll have more patience with the 70 and find more!!!!

Good relic hunting info here, you guys; will try the two tone method; been using 4 & it's frustrating when hunting relics.

Thanks :clapping:
