Relic Settings

I am going hunting Saturday at an old military camp area from the mid 1800's. This is the first time I will be at such a location as I usually coinshoot. Anyway, I'll be trying the MXT in Relic mode and wonder what settings folks have had good luck with. Ground should be around 45 to 50. Hope to find some old buttons, dropped bullets, and a few old coins. Thanks, HH TonyTX(MXT)

Hey Tony,
Sounds like your ground is about as neutral as it gets. Wish I had ground like that.
I use the MXT in the "<STRONG><span style="background-color:#ffff00;">Relic</span></STRONG>" Mode with the trigger in the <span style="background-color:#ffff00;"><STRONG>center</STRONG></span> position. I also run the "<STRONG><span style="background-color:#ffff00;">Disc</span></STRONG>" at "<span style="background-color:#ffff00;">2</span>" or just under. Once I have the ground balanced, I switch tracking to "<STRONG><span style="background-color:#ffff00;">Lock</span></STRONG>" to stop the tracking. Dig any <STRONG><span style="background-color:#ffff00;">high tone</span></STRONG> signal as it's normally non-ferrous. Hope this helps.
Good luck with your hunt. Be sure to let us know how it goes.
Good Hunting,
<STRONG><EM>Otto...</EM></STRONG>

Otto, Thanks for the information. I'm looking forward to hunting the area. I know it has been heavily hunted in the past but it sounds like it still gives up some nice items from time to time. I had a fellow hunter tell me that was the reading he had on his MXT. I will keep my fingers crossed and see what I find,g.
Thanks again, HH Tony

Hey Mike, I just have the stock coil. I need to get a DD or one of the other nice ones too. I'll go slow and listen carefully. I hope I am able to find some good stuff. I'll let you know how it goes... Thanks and HH TonyTX(MXT)

... at that discrimination setting you will miss very small rusty iron, but bigger iron will still give a good signal. At such an old military site, you DO want to dig big iron. As Otto suggested, once ground balanced, turning off the tracking mode will get a tiny bit more depth, and also you won't track to the rust residue which has impregnated the soil. However, be sure to check your ground balance from time to time. Also, with your soil so mild (I'm envious; my soil reads 79 to 84) crank the gain up as high as you can, to get maximum depth. If, on an "iffy" signal, you can't be sure whether it is "good" or "bad", pass the coil back over the target site from different angles. That may help to determine if it is worth digging. But remember the old adage "when in doubt, dig it out." Hope you do well; HH jim

Thanks to you and Otto for the info. I'm really excited to go on this hunt. I will try the settings and use the advise that you both passed on. I'll find out if 45 - 50 is correct when I get there,g. It should be a lot of fun and I'm going with two good hunting buddies. They are both big Garrett uses and always give me grief on my MXT,g. All in fun though! Thanks again and HH TonyTX

I have found in the camps I hunt that if I get a good repeatable signal from any one of the 4 swing directions that there usually is a non-ferous target there, it may be masked but there is usually one there.

I have been hunting using the threshold sounds in relic and coin mode and have been wondering if in relic mode a tone one way might be good.thanks also when i do get this i use the other modes to see if it good.Just wondering.

I made a quick trip to the camp with a hunting buddy of mine and spent about an hour or so looking it over and doing a little swinging with the MXT. We hunted a very small area that was very busy with iron. I ran the MXT in relic mode with the disc at about 2. The ground was indeed about 50. I had a bullet show at about 4 inches. I dug the signal and it was indeed a fired slug. It looked like two rings on it but it was solid on the bottom. I also found some shotgun brass, 12 gauge and one that looked like .410 or smaller. No coins were found this time. I did run the MXT up to about 3 and with the trigger forward. There was much iron. I wonder which coil would be a better one for this type of area? I'll get a picture up of the bullet and what ever else I find. Thanks again for all the info on settings. HH TonyTX(MXT)

I got the the site about 9 am. The area was a military camp back in the early 1840's and it was called Camp Cazneau across from what was Kenney's Fort near Round Rock Tx. The site is along Brushy Creek which is still running. The site has been hunted many times and in the past has yielded very nice finds. A friend of mine hunt there a few days ago and found a 1868 Shield Nickel and a unfired Spencer repeater round. There were three of us hunting today. I was the lone White's user as John and Anthony use Garrett machines. I didn't find as much as I hoped, no coins. I found 3 old shotgun brass ends, 2 brass cartridges of some size larger than a 22 caliber, another lead bullet (small caliber), several square nails for the fun of it, and lot's of junk. I feel like I walked a 100 miles! Wish I could report better results but lack of goodies was compensated by a fun day with two good friends and talk of hunts yet to come. I should have one or two pictures later on. HH to all...

Anthony found these the other day at the camp.. HH TonyTX

That's Tony on the left(Skillet on the right). His arm fell off yesterday after we made him pose holding a Garrett. <img src="/metal/html/shocked.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":shock"> Doctors say the prognosis is good for re-attachment of the rebellious limb!! <img src="/metal/html/lol.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":lol"> Happy Hunting all!!

Hey John... I was a little tired today after our hunt at the Camp. We had a good day of it despite meager finds. You did find that old Spencer brass though. My arm was all swollen from the allergy to the green machine but it is getting back to normal after swinging the MXT in the back yard for awhile <img src="/metal/html/biggrin.gif" border=0 width=15 height=15 alt=":D"> Look forward to our next hunt... HH TonyTX

I'm in relic mode, which would be the only way to hear this one beep.
