Ok I have been trying to learn this Relic hunting mode with no luck I have read the book MXT 300 and I am going nowhere. I use relic mode disc on 3 and I hear high beep and grunts as i call them. The display shows button or buckle? What am I doing wrong. I also have another question I am finding it very difficult to pinpoint with hit with the DD coil is this a common thing..

Thanks DJBUTCH

I hunt in Relic mode with my MXT and have been for about 3 or 4 months and I've taken a liking to it.
I run my machine at Mode Switch Relic / Disc 2 / Gain 9 / Threshold slight hum / Track Switch Ground / Trigger Switch Forward.
90% of the time I'm running the 6X9 DD coil.
I don't pay any attention to the target ID, just the VDI number and Confidence blocks.
After you have dug up a homeless mans worth of recycling you learn the VDI's of the "good" stuff in your area.
Not to say you stop digging pulltabs and foil, just you have a better idea of what it will or can be.
With the Trigger Switch forward, most all of the low grunts of "ferrous" targets (like iron) are eliminated and you hear the high chirps of "non-ferrous" targets, such as coins and jewelry.
So when my MXT chirps I listen to the sound and take a look at the screen and check the VDI.
I look for a nice sharp or crisp sound and a VDI that is in a good zone and repeats with good Confidence blocks.
If it's one that has produced good results for me in that area I'll dig.
It takes a little getting used to, but I dig most all of the high chirps anyway. You just never know.
You just can't tell when that Gold ring is hiding under the grass.
As far as "pin pointing" goes that is something that you will get used to.
The best way to practice is to raise a piece of wood (no nails) about 6in above clean ground put a dime in the middle.
Set your MXT up the same way as you would hunt except you will need to set the "Track Switch" to lock.
Now pass your coil over the coin as if you were detecting it. This is simular to "air testing".
Raise the coil until your signal is weak. Pull your "Trigger Switch" to PinPoint and Pinpoint the dime.
Watch your meter and listen to the sound when you have the strongest signal make note of where your dime is in relation to the coil.
Play with it and you will see and hear the "spot" on the coil that is the center.
Another way is to " X " the target making note of the imaginary center of the " X".
It all takes a little practice and patience.
This is just what works for me and how I learned my MXT in Relic mode.
If you don't have "The MXT Edge" look for a copy it's a good read.
I hope some of this helps and HH

You're not doing anything wrong. The low tones (or Grunts) is whats been discriminated out. The high tones are what you've accepted. Remember, the VDI is based on target size and conductivity so large iron may give you a positive VDI and a high tone. Remember to check your targets from two different directions. If you get a solid high tone from two different directions then its probably a good target. If you get a high tone from one direction and a mixed or low tone from the other then its probably junk. The best advice I can give anyone is to spend some time with the machine and dig every target until you figure it out. Good Luck

Keep Your Coil To The Soil

Thanks for all the info folks will try them when it stops raining here again. Will keep you posted and hopefully have some pics to post.

Those fellas gave you great advice, can't really add anything to them. i hunt 100% of the time in relic mode, no disc, slight threshold, down ground, gain depends on soil conditions. Heavy black sands I drop gain to about 7, good soil I try to go to +1 -+2. I also do not pay attention to screen, I use sound and bars, and vdi numbers. But reality is you should dig everything.

Honestly if your not actually hunting for relics and are hunting for coins, use the C&J mode, Learn the VDI #s from C&J and once you know what they are start Hunting in Relic mode. Also dig pull tab signals. Its all about learning your machine and it can be fast if you do a lot of hunting. Good luck.
