Relic mode. Jewelry mode. Coin mode.

When selecting one of these modes, is the detector simply using programmed notches. If so, seems like the Custom mode can be set-up to duplicate the notches. I don't have a Garrett, just trying to learn what the modes actually do. Thanks in advance for any replies.

Yes, I do believe you could duplicate the pre-settings by using the custom function.
I really think that is the one feature of my Ace that I fail to take advantage of. Detecting in neutral soil and generally coin shooting or jewelery hunting my need for customizing my 250 signal interpretation so far has been a non issue.
With my memory these days, trying to remember which customized program I have created could be a challenge.

Yes, the programs are just factory selected notched discrimination. You can duplicate them in the Custom Mode, by why would you want to? My current Custom mode is the same as Coin mode but I knocked the nickel setting out for high-trash areas. You can still use notch discrimination in ANY mode you choose, also. Custom mode is simply a one-button way to get to a setting you desire that isn't already in the other 4 modes.

Ive used the custom mode to program notches for a particular item. This is described in the instructions.
I was contacted by a guy once who had lost his 1952 GT ring. Using a similar ring, I programmed the custom notches for that one hit, plus one to either side.
It worked and I found the ring without being distracted by other signals. He paid me $200 to boot.
I've also emulated this and programmed the custom setting for common jewelry hunting, where I leave coins and iron signals notched OUT. I dont respond to coins, only to the midrange where jewelry is found. Of course, you find a lot pulltabs that way, but waste little time digging those pesky coins.

Nothing but the notch reject or accept is changed in mode changes. The power stays the same at 6 bars in all modes. You can accept or reject any or all notches in all or any modes. By having modes it lets you quickly adjust the detector for different hunting without notching in or out targets all the time. The 250 will remember your custom mode setting but returns all other modes to factory default when you power down. I don't know of a faster or easier detector that lets you make so many adjustments so quickly.

Uncle Willy-

Remember: there is a difference between knowledge and wisdom. I may have the knowledge of how to setup and swing a detector, but wisdom is what it takes to find the good loot. I'm still working on that wisdom thing.
