Relic Hunting

crabby

New member
I'm posting this here because on the other forum's I think this question might be misconstrued.

I look at relic finds and all I see is rust. What am I missing? What is the allure? I'm not trying to denigrate relic hunters so can you relic hunters fill me in?

Crabby Ron

One man's junk is another man's treasure.

Personally I love finding old coins. I don't think much of jewelry. It's nice to find, but it just doesn't float my boat.

That's probably the best answer.

I too am a coin shooter, but finding jewelry every once in a while does make my heart flutter.

I don't get to relic hunt that much because of where I am located. I wish I could hunt for relics more often. My first choice would be the Civil War relics. Not only are they historic but many are valuable. Every time I dig up a old token, dated pin, or button I an thrilled. I just like the history. Rob

If you are ever down our way Rob, I got a hillside for 69 cal. Minnie's shot from a Civil War camp in Peoria. That's about as close to CW relics as we can get.

Some how I will get there next year. Rob

Relic hunting is the trill of digging up history. I like to imagine who was the last person to have touched the Item I just dug up, or even who lost it, some relics even tell a story by having the persons name stamped on it. When I am out prospecting an area and come across an old camp site or miners cabin and I do a little relic hunting, and you find personal belongings of the miners or persons living there it's as good as gold to me.

I agree with you. To the casual observer, "relics" arent much to look at. It's in the mind that these things take on importance.
Now, find a coin where you find relics and it's liable to be a very old one. So boundaries are not firm.

Do what makes you happy.

A few reasons why we relic hunt.
The thrill of an elusive button.

Or some of our countries history.
Yes we dig iron, shotgun shells, trash and rusted metal but to each his own. I used to be a coin hunter and still wouldn't turn them down now but theres something about walking endless farm fields and up and down wooded hills that our ancestors once troded. We hunt relics for the same reason you hunt coins, because we like them.
Not saying either is better than the other but in the best way that I can explain it I'll say one mans trash is another mans treasure....Jim

JIM, YOU HAVE A NICE COLLECTION THERE.:clapping: That's exactly why I hunt relics!
