Relic Hunting an old Farm House

Was hunting a new site today that is turning out to be a fairly target rich site. Has anyone ever found silver slag at a mid to late 1800s farm site? I'm pretty sure its silver and wondering if somebody was making jewelry or if the house burned down and melted down a few pieces of silver.

Haven't found any coins, but did find half of an interesting handmade, heart-shaped locket, as well as some ornate hinges, and various badly decomposed iron pieces. I'll be going back next Friday and investigate further. I can't wait to see what other stories this site will hint at, while it offers up more tokens of the past.

I have found slag at old house sites but I wasn't sure if it wasn't aluminum. I guess a jeweler could test it for you.

Well, I'm thinking its something other than aluminum because it comes out high on the MXTs conductivity scale and aluminum only goes about half as high. Not to mention these mishapen balls of metal are a little heavier than equivalent aluminum, but cleaning them up they have patches of bright metal interspersed with blackened areas.

i think i know what you speak of ,i was detecting around a cellar hole that a hunter had pointed out to me ,which to the trained eye ended up being 3 cellar holes, and i found a "glob" i'm pretty sure that it's silver also it cleaned up almost effortlessly and has the same heft as silver.does yours have any grain to it? under the eye loupe my peice has some weird stuff going on! and unfortunately i have no idea on these silver slags

Yeah, it has grain to it. I suspect the debris from the house or the house itself was burned and that's why the slag. I have a larger piece that I'll have to have checked out as well. If this is silver it would be great to have somebody that could smelt it and remove the impurities, what with the price of silver these days.

Silver will be heavier than Aluminum; Silver will oxidize and turn black in some areas or all over; Aluminum was invented before the Civil War, and is highly conductive, like Silver. But again, is much lighter than pure Silver. You might have Silver solder. Good hunting, David@Dixie
