Made it out on Sat. before the rain here in the Gold country.
A friend of mine said he knew of an old site (1857) and did I want to go...
Well H*** yes...
We met up at 8 and headed for the hills.. Quite a drive and then a BIG hike into the hills and canyons.
When we made it there it wasn't much to look at. It had been logged years ago and was tore up to the point you wouldn't
know that there was a site there. Scattered pieces of tin and stove here and there, but it looked promising. he
said he and his other hunting partners had been coming there for a few years. ( you know it's never hunted out)
Well, I haven't done the relic hunt stuff, so this would be new for me.
I hunted about the same as I would in a park full of trash with a BUNCH of tin and nails.
You couldn't move your coil more than an inch or two and NOT get a hit of some sort of trash.
I had my 6x9 on the MXT and set it in relic, trigger center, disc 2, gain 10+ and threshold at just a slight hum.
I tried it with the trigger forward, but found that I wanted to hear all the signals.
We hunted hard for most of the day, about 8 hrs with a short break for lunch.
Sites like these don't yield much, but if you like history and gold rush relics it's a fun time.
Bill told his wife before he left that I would find something great... beginners luck...
He didn't find much... an old cork screw and the "T" part of a brass spigot.
I on the other hand did find something great.
Although not valuable as coins go, I found my oldest coil yet...
It's an Austrian 1816 EIN KREUZER, It's about the same size as a quarter.
When you stop and think this settlement burned in 1857, this coin has been laying there 153yrs before I drug my coil over it and pulled to the sun again.
And to think that some poor soul brought this with him from Austria to America then around the horn to San Francisco and then up on the gold
trail to this small gold site and then to loose it.
WOW........ a real piece of history here in my hand..... if only it could tell me more..
I also found a small woman's locket that is gold plated. It was in two pieces about a foot apart. Another cool gold rush find.
I had a great time and found some great relics.
And you know I'll be trying this more...
Now I hope I can get the pictures to load.
Hope you get out...
