Relic hunt with 5.5" coil

dbado1

New member
Took the Relic for a short three hour hunt this afternoon and armed it with the small coil.
I went to my post Civil War Calvary site that has been hunted by a number of different machines including the Relic with the 11x7 coil.
All I can say is that I am totally shocked!!! I purposely went over a small area that I had hunted with the Relic and the bigger coil when I first got it. I was very impressed then, with the Relic's first run, in that it pulled goodies that the CoRe and other machines had missed. Now, I am blown away, as the Relic with the small coil pulled even more goodies from the same spot! What I kept asking myself was "how could we/I have missed that"?

I recorded the hunt with my new Go-Pro. I will try to edit and get it posted so you can see the Relic in action. (I'm a newbie to the video thing so if it sucks I won't post it) In the mean time, here are a couple of pics of today's finds...

.56 Spencer cases, 2 ringer, and a few buttons from hard hunted ground.

There is a good amount of trash here, mainly nails, but I dug very few "false positives" with the smaller coil. The settings- DI3, Sens. 80, ID Mask 4, 2nd Tone Break 80, iMask 0. Ground balanced at 84.
I've put perhaps 25 hours on the Relic so far and I am becoming more familiar and confident with it every time out. Very happy with this machine. It brings home the goodies every time out!

Keep digging my friend. I loved the F19 but now I have more depth and fast recovery speed

I haven't yet tried my small relic coil..
Haven't found any sites with enough trash to need it lol.
But I've heard great things, including this thread!
Very happy so far with my relic, but I'm still learning not only the detector, but the hobby and art of it.
Happy hunting and nice finds!!!
P.s. I'd love to see more relic videos.... I find myself rewatching the same ones haha

FORS Relic and 5½" DD coil ... my #1 favorite go-to set-up.

The Relic, like the CoRe or Racer 2, all using their matching 7X11 DD standard search coils, and with comparable settings, can provide very good Relic Hunting performance. The FORS CoRe is what got me hooked on, and converted to, the Nokta FORS series. I've done well with the CoRe, and I do well with the Racer 2 today in most of the old sites I like to hunt, but the smaller coil is the best tool for trashier conditions. The new FORS Relic is easily my favorite detector, ever, for serious Relic Hunting in dense debris with that 5½" DD coil.

We always miss good targets due to an errant sweep path, sweep speed, maybe wrong settings, not listening closely to the marginal response hint of a fringe area masked target .... That said, we can also do a lot better with the detector and coil and settings used and sweep presentation are in our favor with a superb performing detector/coil combination, and that's what you're using.

Your settings are kind of close to what I use on my Relic, except in Di3 I have my upper Tone Break set at '65' to be able to bring in more of the Indian Head and early Wheat-Back US cents with the higher-pitch tone.

Trash type and size can always be a challenge, and iron nails are a joy to hunt in with the Relic (or the CoRe or Racer 2 or other FORS and Racer series models) and where I encounter the most frustration is when I work the old camp sites and town sites where rusty tin abounds. That's a real challenge, but in those conditions I prefer to use the Di3 three tone mode as it seems to help with audio classification of junk targets combined with the visual Target ID read-out.

I am sure you will enjoy the Relic mode and more and time goes by. On my last trip out I had to replace the alkaline batteries in my FORS Relic ... for the 6th or 7th time, so I am really feeling more comfortable with it in any search environment I encounter.

Matter of fact, I am going to go put some more drain on those batteries as I am headed out to a site in 10 minutes. :detecting:

Best of success with your Relic,

Monte

Monte, when you say relic mode do you mean deep (DEP) mode on the relic?
Thanks

And you are asking about is: "I am sure you will enjoy the Relic mode and more and time goes by. "

Proof reading I would have corrected the 'd' with an 'r' and changed the 'and' to 'as' to read: "I am sure you will enjoy the Relic more and more as time goes by. "

Haha thanks monte. All makes sense now!!

Good luck, Monte!

Having swung the Relic for a bit now I have noticed that pennies (copper) come in around 83-85 VID and other coins even higher. Therefore, while relic hunting, I want the high tone to be a signal of something potentially "coin-like" or at ,at least , a higher conductive metal. I really like the mid-tone sound on the Relic. It favors my hearing. So, broadening the mid tone target response is a great option for me.
