Relic Find from 1600's Farmhouse

Erik in NJ

New member
I dug this item this evening during short hunt. I looks quite old and appears to be a lead cap or a lead seal as far as I can tell. At the 12 'o clock and 6 'o clock positions there is a single iron or steel wire and a double wire that protruded from it (broken off). It appears to be made of two pieces and it is VERY heavy. Any ideas?

Looks to me like whatever it was,it went through a fire & melted into a "blob". The steel in it may have just been laying there as it melted around it. I'd guess the side showing in the 2nd pic was towards the ground, which is why it's flatter.....and having been hit by a disc could have been a good possibility.

It appears to be constructed of a flat lid topped with a blob of lead or pewter in which there is a wire that runs straight through it possibly for fastening it to a container or an item. The base (lid) might be either copper or brass (?). I can't find any markings on it.
