Reliability of the AT Pro

Pete in MI

New member
I will be buying one new soon and am curious of any known problems others have had with the unit. Sounds like Leslie NS has had some problems. So what is your experience? I am looking to do water hunts, relic hunting, hitting tot lots and some old properties (with permission).

Most detectors I have owned since the 70s have been Garrett's and never had a problem with any of them.

Thanks in advance

Hundreds of hours on mine and had the stock coil go bad. Called Garrett and I had a new one in my hands two days later. Before I even had the defective coil packed and shipped to them. Hardly even a problem IMHO. HH jim tn

I treat mine pretty rough, going on 3yrs in all sorts of weather....only problem was the headphone cord on the blue phones shorted out last Summer...I called Garrett, Sue sent me a new pair right away! New blue phones have a longer cord...
Only thing you need to pay attention to if you are water hunting is the camlocks...they get silt in them and jam up tight...like real tight!...so either a fellow takes them off completely or cleans them out real good after each hunt...

Garrett always has had the BEST customer service from the beginning. Thanks again.

Just bought my 5th AT Pro and have never had any issues with any of them.

my camlocks have been sammed for two years good thing they fit me no adjustment needed

I had a few glitches when I first got mine, and I thought that the machine was a P.O.S. I was wrong, and this machine has been rock solid for several years now. My issue was a bad headphone connection and lousy replacement service from a distributor up here.

Let me start by saying that I have used mine very heavily for years now: freshwater, saltwater, land, rain, very cold temps, etc. My stock headphones short here and there. I had the the arm cusp fold in two - seriously, broke on a gentle swing. I think Garrett redid them in manufacturing b/se the new one i received was thicker. has worked great since. the decal on the readout screen got air bubbles behind it - Garrett sent me a new one to put on.

So, small issues for something I feel like I have really put through its paces.

I would wholeheartedly recommend it - not only for durability, but for what I have found using it. hard to beat value.

Great links there MM...I have never had the chance to read them before...! :clapping::thumbup:

I have owned 5 AT Pros. Once they hit 2 years old I sell and buy new so I always have a unit under warranty. Works out great since the resale value holds pretty well on these units. The last one I bought new for $525 and after 2 years sold for $450 so for $75 I had a brand spanking new unit!

Bless you too , Brother

Choppa, have you noticed anything better on your newer Pro's versus the older ones. Sensitivity, the screen, depth anything. I have one of the first models. They were all called back for a few reasons. Except for the standard headphones, it's been a workhorse. Headphones were replaced by Garrett.

Its funny that i see this reliability topic..It was gonna be a nice Saturday mid 80's in Buffalo and Sunday was a sure wash out with a bunch of rain with maybe a window of opportunity for a park hunt Sunday. Only have one detector at this time and i'm thinking is my Sunday shot if this AT Pro fails due to water? My research of the area pushed me into the water Saturday and luckily i was able to detect that window of opportunity on Sunday. Excellent machine but if your going into the water just make sure your connections are tight. Have no worries and be confident!!

I've had the screw posts which protrude out of the control box into the rod snap on both AT Pros I have.

Had the old style arm cuff snap on both units too, but the newer and stronger ribbed one has given me no problems.

I've had a couple other issues too, but Garrett has great customer service and they have always made it right for me. And if the unit is out of warranty, they are reasonable on repair costs.
