Redid the Silver UMax in air test.

I had posted some numbers of the distances coins would give a signal on my Silver UMax.. The results were bothersome in that I dug several coins exceeding the original air test distances. This time I put the detector on a garbage can, with the speaker facing away from me..I put a board against the coil so That I could sweep the coins instead of just wiggle (as in the other test).and mark where the last "good" signal was DISC set at Iron, and sensitivity on max as I now hunt .Have some hearing problems, so the speaker facing the opposite direction has to be a good signal for me to hear it..I marked the distances , then measured when done..That way, just the spot distance,is given,," no helping"...Am calling a cent / silver dime in the 6 plus to 6 1/2 inch range...The clad quarter at 7 1/2 inches...Giving up 20 to 25 percent in the ground,,,and everything now fits..On all metal. you can get a slight increase..Since that is a "sand pit only" search mode, didn't add the extra half inch or so..Don't use earphones, so there is no way of knowing if the distance numbers would be jacked up any. I don't give a Rat's behind what anyone thinks or says, The Silver UMax is an exceptional value for the money..Will probably wind up with three detectors, a raw power ground pounder, and two Silver U's..Might even try a set of phones, except I hate those ear shattering blasts.Friend getting a Golden UMax.. Will be interesting to compare depth, and DOLLARS per INCH of DEPTH..I think we could do an interesting chart of all the detectors with $/inch..The super buys would stand out. Thanks for taking the time to read my ramblings, cordially NAD

How much deeper is the Silver Umax over the Compadre on cent / silver dime and clad quarter or in general approximately ??

Or the other way around, how much is the Cibola--Vaquero over the Silver Umax ??

as for the air tests Ive done with the Compadre 5.75 coil an Silver Umax 8" donut coil over a variety of coins the Silver gets 1-2" extra depth in air over the Compadre

Hay Nad.

Get all metal objects like trash cans out of the way.

Get away from any electrical interferance.

Just use a big cardboard box or something like that to set it on.

The trash can may mess with the results.

Nad, those results are very near what I get from my Silver Sabre umax which was replaced by the Silver. I agree, good detector for the money and you can do a pretty good job of guessing whether your target is a coin by thumbing the disc. and learning the sounds.
I think if you get decent headphones and adjust them for a comfortable volume level, you'll quickly find that they help you become one with the machine and will hear the break up tones of tabs etc better.

I don't know.

My Compadre is not working or I would check it.

They are different.

But they may be similar on depth.

But on the other hand, I have found some awful deep

targets with the Silver using the stock 8" coil.

They are so different, I don't think of it in terms of depth.

I think depth is over stated for the most part.

It's getting colder, so I'm gonna try my headphones again. I just can't wear the good ones too long-my ears get hot and also get cramped. I use the cheapies and can hear some little crackles, etc,. but I'm sure it's more noticeable with the good ones. Using the 4" coil on the Silver this week got me to wanting a 5.75" coil badly-but I'm back to square one-should I just get the coil for my Silver or take the plunge and get the Compadre.:rage:

That's a hard one.

5.75's are great on deeper machines.

The Compadre is great for what it does.

It's really two very different things.

It's getting easier to find a used 5.75 coil than a used Compadre.

I had to get my second Compadre new.

But it's worth it to me.

This hobby has given me so much, I can justify doing it.

Happy Hunting,

nad your test reflect the tests i did on the silver umax using the 8" coil i could peg a dime at 5" easy and my ground is minearalized whith a good percentage of black sand i wish i had not sold my umax because i would love one whith a 3x18 coil and it is really a good detector for the buck the only reason i got rid of mine was i hated the 8" coil so rather than buy a 5.75 coil which i did not have the money for i traded it for a compadre ohh well
