Red Racer still a great performer.

Although the Racer 2 does have some nice added features over the Red Racer, doesn't make Red any less of a performer.( in spite of the grip angle :) ) Was hunting a site and I had the oor coil mounted on the R2 and the 5.5 x 10 coil on Red. I was searching a not so extremely iron infested area with the Red Racer and 5.5 x 10 coil and it squeaked out a nice mid tone. Noticed it was a low VDI number ,48 ( generally a nickel is around 56) but in a ghost town you dig. Get a decent tone, ya dig. To my surprise instead of a 22 shell casing or other junk, the Red Racer got me a first, a 1874 three cent nickel.

99% of the time on the Red Racer my settings are, click it over to 3 tone and ground balance, leaving it in its default settings of 70 gain and ID Filter at 10. The Racer 2 did find me a few neat artifacts as well, a D&RG railroad lock ( Denver & Rio Grande) and a 1901 sheep ear tag along with some other stuff.

At one time I thought about selling the Red Racer but decided to keep it, still a great performer.

Hi Gregg, I to have the Red Racer, and have a question. When I get a good tone hit and the VDI is __ __ what is that? I have dug and not frond anything. The sound is very good like a good target, no VDI just the __ __ on the screen. I have had my Racer for about one year and just started to use it. I have 9 detector and need to sell some. The Rad Racer did me good yesterday I got a Buffalo nickle and a gold button.

Thanks Guys, as far as the -- -- the only time I see that is on start up. But it is my understanding on a deep target that is on the outer edges of the machines limits, the machine will still give a tone but not a VDI number instead you get the -- -- symbol. I have not come across that yet, as I am always hunting trashy sites and depth isn't a factor. Hopefully someone that has come across this scenario of the -- -- symbol w/ a tone, can give a better explanation than I can.

Great finds Gregg. What site did you make the finds.

Are you back in Oregon? I bet if I had made the hunt we would still be there.

I wonder if I could get the Red Racer control housing mounted on the R2 upper shat.

Gregg is correct on the -- --. it's usually a target to deep to identify. When I get those, I just toggle over to Two tone and it usually will give me a TID. Congrats on the finds Gregg! I left those there so you'd have something to show for your trip! :cheekkiss:

The red racer is a turn on and go machine...just the way I want my machine to run all the power goes into the coil not other programs..Pure power at it's best. No one can really understand why that machine works so well at the freq it runs at but it finds it all...I'll be keeping mine and may never retire it

keep up the great finds

LOL Tom it is always nice when someone is looking out for ya

So Tom, besides the WTHO, You were also seeking treasure else where, I think Wendover AKA Casinos.......How did that treasure hunt turn out......did ya have to call your accountant and figure out how to shelter all the treasure winnings ???

p.s hope ya post a pic of that Military Button you found.....is one of the nicest I've ever seen.

Gregg,
We had a great time detecting, the casino not so much. The best I can tell about my button is that it was made by the Scovill Mf'g Co. Waterbury, CT sometime between 1860 - 1865. It's a general service button (enlisted men) coat button. Found with my Racer using the 5.5 X 10" coil.

I was anxiously awaiting some trip reports from Monte's ghost town trip!

Gregg congrats on the three center, that's a rare find in any part of our country, and that RR lock is a super find  There were two RR locks found last September and this one (or were there more) on this trip, seems like great sites for RR lock hunting!

Tom that button's a beauty alright, never seen a 150 year old dug button in such great shape, but that arid sandy desert soil can be really kind to non-ferrous metals.

I'll have to pop into Monte's relic site and see if anyone's posted more finds from the trip. I had to pick between that and the annual Tonopah Memorial weekend trip, and believe me it was a hard choice!

hh,
Brian

Hi Brian, yes we missed you this year. But the Tonopah trip might be the better choice, as far as weather is concerned. The weather started out nice but quickly turned bad. Got cold with on and off rain and wind. Hope you do well on your trip and let us know what you find. And ya pop over to Montes site to see some other nice finds from the trip.

Super nice finds, especially the three center!

Hey all,
Great finds gregg!!
Is there somewhere I can see listing about these "trips" you all take?
I'm fairly green, but would enjoy looking for more than clad in parks and hoping for a gold ring... lol.
Thanks and sorry to hijack the thread...
