Hi bxlarry, I have the F70 and F2, the 70 used AA and the F2, sadly, uses a pair of 9 volts. I went to rechargeable and they worked great. My only problem was I bought a cheap charger and you had to have the batteries on for over 10 hours, and being the forgetful person that I am, I would constantly forget to have the batteries charged. A buddy would call and sure enough, no batteries ready so I would slap in a couple of Duracell's and they work great. One of the things is the 9 volts fit so tight the base will catch hold of the 9 volt bottom rim and make it really difficult to remove -- the rechargeables have a smooth bottom and are a snap to install and remove. I would recommend the NiMd rechargeable 9 volts but spend the money for a super charger, 2 hours to charge, or buy two chargers. The problem is that you are not to leave the batteries in the chargers any longer than to charge. My experience is that just about any 9 volt ( alkaline) will work. Just a work about the F70 -- it uses 4 AA batteries and the usage time is incredible. I don't want to know how they do it, but these Machines last and last. I put a set of AA in my machine and hours and hour later they still are going strong. When I think too long about how long they last I have this uneasy feeling that I do not have a really powerful machine, then I find a clad at 6" and a mercury at 4". About every third time out, an average of 2hours of searching, I would be replacing my 9 volts -- with this F70 I have used the same batteries for a month going out twice a week, for 2 hours -- this morning, same batteries, I went out for 4 hours -- why so long? I was finding stuff and could not stop, I finally got to tired to go on, and guess what, the AA still show full on my scale -- fantastic. When I first got this machine I had heard about the reputation of the 70 models longevity in power but being nervous I after several hours of searching I would convince myself to change the batteries even though the charge scale showed good. I finally ran it down to a single bar and then changed the batteries out. I used the left over batteries in my mini flash light. If you become more than an occasional MD head I would suggest you consider the rechargeable 9 volts, look on Amazon, shop around. My F2 found lots of stuff and I really liked the machine -- I found enough money and treasure with it that my wife let me talk her into buying the F70. One guy told me that he buys his 9 volts for his F4 at the Dollar Store, or Dollar Tree and only pays a buck apiece for them? I guess hi F4 could not tell the difference. In my F2, for two years of searching, I used Heavy Duty 9 volts (not supposed to) and they worked, I have used Energizers and copper tops and I found some Fuji 9 volts at Big Lots and bought them out, about 20 of them and they worked fine, except for the bottoms hanging up in the compartment when trying to remove them. I used the Fujis along with my recharge batteries (not together) when the recharge were not ready I used the Fuji and they were as good as the other. This is probably way more information than you wanted or need but I was just sitting here being bored with nothing else to do. Peace, bxlarry
