Recieved this letter today fron a national antiquities dealer that deals with historical military items.

I have still been sending out inquiries to people in the know, trying to identify my MVM sword belt plate. This is a letter I received today from these people... what do you guys think?

Thank you for your inquiry. I have been reviewing your photos & information with our Civil War consultant, who agrees that this is a very unusual and unknown piece. Based on the photos, it looks real but of course would have to be seen to make an absolute determination. One value to be considered would be the size of the piece. It should measure between 48 & 51mm high. Anything else would not qualify.

Because of its rarity, and its virtual unknown origin, it would be difficult to give an estimate on it. In the auction process, there are a number of influences that would come to play in the final sale price of such an item. In recent years there was another

they appraised a hand carved tobacco pipe that was carved during the cival war and it named the massachussets volunteer militia and was attributed to the war of antietem, it also said who was the carver and it had who the bowl was made for carved on it, I don't recall the appraisal value, but it was interesting, I wonder how your buckel would appraise at the antiques road show..................
 
I remember when you posted that great find and looks like it just keeps getting better. :thumbup:
