Reccomendation on an inexpensive do all detector

Dig

Active member
If you were going to buy an inexpensive (not cheap...but inexpensive) metal detector, that you could use on the beach and in a backyard or park, what would you get? I have looked at a new ace 250 (but I heard they take a dump over wet sand) and I have my eye on a used minelab xterra 30, but I am open to ideas. I am still going to purchase a minelab excal 2 for my primary detector (can that be used in a backyard as well? and how bout freshwater?) but I thought it might be nice to have a secondary for a friend or if I wanted to break it up and learn another machine for other uses. Im grateful for any comments you guys might have for me. Thanks again!

If you want to hit the wet sand, you'll need a multi-frequency machine.
Best bet is an old Minelab Soverign XS. On a good day $350 used.

The ACE250 will work in the wet sand and the water(do not submerge) whether it is fresh or salt water. In salt water you have to drop the sensitivity down to 3 or 4 but it will work. An amazing machine for the money. Check out Crackbadger on Youtube and see for yourself.

Cheers,

BDA:cool:
PS It won't take on an Excal or a PI unit but it only cost $200 so bang for buck it is an excellent deal.

My suggestion get the Excal-2 first, use it often and learn it well.
After say 6 month use and a whole lot of self obtained experience You will know what features a second detector should have.
Unfortunately there are no inexpensive do all detector available if there was We would all be using one.
Yes the Excal 2 can be used in fresh water and back yards no trouble.
A detector without a screen will often make a better operator.

Minelab Excalibur 2___Lots of audio info__No screen for visual info.

You might look at the new Pirate by Detector Pro 300.00 light weight. The excal would be tough to hunt with on land and be comfortable. I hunt on land with a Troy X5 mostly but have many others with visual ID and prefer to hunt by sound. Dan

The Xterra is a good machine and if you intend on buying an Excal then I would suggest getting the Xterra and get used to how Minelab works. Every company is slightly different with their sounds and responses so to shorten your learning time with the Minelab products. Xterra 30 will work in the damp sand but you have to turn down the sensitivity somewhat. It is great as a basic machine and will find many treasures for you. It does not have as many bells and whistles as the Xterra 50 & 70 but works just as good. Remember the machine is only as good as you are. We have an Xterra 30.

Do what I did. Go with the DetectorPro Head Hunter Wader. Has discrimination if you want to use it, good in fresh and salt water as well as wet and dry sand. Good for 6 feet deep. If you're in the water and a wave yanks off your headphones and hits the drink, you've got nothing to worry about. Pick 'em up, put 'em on and keep on detectin'. I bought mine last year and love this unit. I can go detecting in the rain with no problem (that's when there's nobody around to bug you). That includes parks, schools and land detecting as well as water detecting. All the controls and batteries are in the head set. No bulky control box to worry about or to carry around. Happy Hunting!!! :detecting:
