Really trashy sites???

Is there a secret to hunting really trashy sites?

I have access to some foundations that are from the early 1900's (that is old for around here). I believe these houses were razed in the 1960's/1970's. There is a lot of junk metal (I mean A LOT), making it impossible for me to distinguish between separate targets. I suspect the 6" coil would help but will not be able to order one for a while. I did just order the low freq. coil and should have it some time this week.

Is there some trick to pulling targets out of this type of environment???

You will find that many "keepers" fall into the same notch segments as some metal trash. The X-Terra is, regardless of the size of the coil, a metal detector. If the targets are as close together as you indicate, you won't likely be able to reject all the junk and, at the same time, accept the goodies. The small coil will allow you to "work" an area in an effort to get between much of the trash. But you will probably still dig some trash if you are doing it right! My approach is to hunt in all metal, slow down the sweeps, work the site from multiple directions, listen for the tones and simply accept the fact that I will likely dig some trash. Don't forget to sweep over the hole after you remove that piece of trash. If a coin or ring was being masked, you stand a better chance of isolating it after the trash has been removed. And always discard that trash. I can't imagine anything more frustrating than digging that same pulltab the next time you hunt that site! Well, actually I can! Nothing irks me more than to be hunting around the base of an old tree, only to find that someone detecting before me tossed all his trash beside it.

So pinpoint the target, dig a "neat" hole, remove all targets, recheck the hole, fill it in, tamp it down and discard the trash. Hopefully, you will find a few old coins and rings in your efforts. As I always say.....

Well stated Sir !!!
