Really nice dated buff...

Switched over to the Compadre yesterday just for giggles and grins, and as always it did not disappoint.
Waded into my local park where I am hunting a small area that I believe has some picnicking history going way back before the park was dedicated in the 20's and then continued through the decades into the 40's-50's-60's and probably beyond.
Now, not so much but I am finding targets that date from modern clad back to the early 1900's.
Nothing super old on yesterday's hunt but I did pick out some stuff from between the trash, heavy iron, and in the red clay mineralized soil.

An old buckle, a junk earring and some sort of other jewelry piece in the same hole that came up clean but fell apart when I barely touched it so might be old...might be silver but no marks, a small copper plate that was backed by a chunk if iron but the copper still sounded of perfectly which I find amazing.
Also three keys and even a nice red 1950 wheat cent.

Later I moved over to see permission yard that backs up to this park and got another good solid tone in the tab area and I was surprised when an old nickel came up from about 4, maybe 5".
On my F70 most targets past 3" are up averaged because of the iron here, didn't realize the Tesoros do that too but nothing else in the hole but this nickel.
It was super dark and dirty but with some rubbing I see it is buff.
More rubbing and I see a date...1917, my oldest so far.
At home I cleaned it a bit more an man are these details sharp, the date, the lettering, all of it.
Must have been dropped soon after it went into circulation.
The pic below is from my camera phone and corrected so you can see the date clearly but trust me, in real life this thing is way better than it seems to look...a real beauty.
Gonna slowly clean it and be careful, this could end up to be the nicest buff I might ever dig.

What a fun and surprisingly productive hunt!

Cleaned it up abit more and looked at it under better light do pitted and not as great as I thought at first but no matter...
Still old, still can read the date, still beautiful to me.

Dated Buff's are hard to come by so good for you. Great find and good hunt.

Check the copper plate. It could be a printer's block with an advertisement on it. The text will be in reverse. Try brushing it with a wire brush. If there is an image, take a digital photo, and flop the pic when you process your photo. You'll be able to read any text that is there.

Thanks...I will check into it.
