Ok so i do need some help on this one!!!! After i pulled the SLQ i did find this little peice of something... when i first dug it i thought it was junk.. i brought it home and cleaned it... I droped it and it sounds like Silver for sure!!!!! It is just a bit smaller than a penny,, but just a bit larger than a dime,,,, There was a 1779 2 Reale found in the area by my friend years ago... If you look,,, It seems as if you can see some shoulders and a head of some one on it,,, and possibly a date of 1811... or maybe i am just going crazy,,, The cold getting to my head lol tell me what you thinkk and tell me how it is lol i wont be hurt,,, If its junk its junk lol
Thanks
Derrell

I found a 1810 1/2 reale 2 years ago. It is close to the same diameter as a dime, but only about half as thick. Is anything visible on the other side?

I've found reales that were worn smooth (or Veerrryy little left to go on) here in CA. Without handling it, and studying it in person, it's pretty hard to say. There's a lot of aluminum punch out-type-stuff that look like coins at first glance too. I know you say it "sounds like silver when you drop it", but again, everyone's opinion of precioius "feel" is subject to their own experience. Reales are certainly thinner than U.S. silver coins, esp. when supposedly worn thing. Try to bend it with your fingers. Does it "give"? If so, then it's probably not a silver reale.

What type site and what state was it found in?

Tom it doesnt bend at all,,,, i think i can see a post on the back,, about the middle area,,, give me a min,, and ill try and get a decent pic of the back and post it... its worse than the front!!!!!!

Ok both pics are the same pic of the back,,, I know its hard to tell without having it in your hand,,, but if you hold it at and angle the black mark in the middle is definitely some kind of post that goes up and the tip kinda angles to the left,,,, The other black marks to the right and left may be post,.,.., look like it but not sure?//? Sorry i lack in the artistic part,, but i kinda made a outline of what the middle marks to at the top of the post,,,,
Thanks

Derrell,

Send it to me and if it doesn't come back to you just know that in my professional opinion it was junk, heehee.

Keep it and keep checking around,it could be something.

Unless it were in a fire. If it is aluminum is is probably an "Uncle Sam's play money circa 1940-1950. I have found a few of those through the years. Or an Italian coin which was aluminum about that size.

Hey Jeff,,, It's definitely not Aluminum! I as well as two other people on this forum have looked at it,,, and it wont bend at all... I have found item such as you described and yo can usually bend them between your fingers... So IDK I think it has been in gravel or something,,, my friend pulled a seated die that was in gravel.. The front was in horrible condition like my find... But you could see the out line of the lady liberty.... But thanks for the opinion,,, Anyone's is appreciated!!!!!! thanks

Derrell

Hey King,,, I will get right on that!!! Look for t in the mail.... lol Thanks bud.. I am,,, and i will post any news i find on it!!!!!
thanks

Derrell , Congrats on the Sweet SLQ. and other nice coins you have been digging. I saw a post a while back that stated that a 1/2 reale gave a 7-27 digital reading on the explorer II , I think it was the II. If your coin reads 27-28 cond. it stands a very good chance to be silver, It could also maybe be a fishscale, but if its silver , a diameter comparison to known coins will help i d it. Nice finds ,...HH Rich

Hi Derrell, have you tried the spit and tinfoil trick? Im not sure if you heard of this one before but it worked for me in the past. Get some new tin foil and spit in it, then put your suspect silver inside the foil then fold it tight and wait a couple of minutes. Open the tin foil up and if it smells a little like sulphur/rotton eggs then its silver!

BTW great finds you have lately! Im getting a new SE pro this spring and you give me hope!

Derrell, as I mentioned in a prior post, a couple of years ago I found a 1810 1/2 reale, Mexico City mint. I just measured it and it measured right at 17 mm diameter (just a tad smaller than a merc), 0.84 mm thick (I measured a silver dime and it is 1.22 mm thick), and on my scale weighed 1.6 grams. The book says the weight was 1.69 grams for a 1/2 reale and 3.38 grams for a 1 reale. The diameter of a 1 reale I don't know for sure, but I believe it's between a penny and nickel. If you can compare your weight and dia. that should give you a very good idea if it is silver and possibly a spanish piece. The reading of the 1/2 reale on my XS is steady 27 with an occasional drop to 26.
