Ready Made Indestructible Scoop.

I plagiarized this idea and modified it to my own use. I took a 1 gallon gas can and cut the end with the spout off from a half inch behind the cap on an angle (like slicing a thick piece of bread) down to about a half inch from the bottom corner. I then proceeded to drill the body full of holes slightly less in diameter then a dime to guarantee no fall out. And I sand all around the cut to smooth it out. But I wound up with the other piece and noticed that it resembled a dust pan and the spout and cap acting as a handle. So I glue the cap on with silicone and drill the flat portion of it like the main body. So I wound up with a good handled scoop and sifter out of the same can.

Also, these are now replaced in the stores by a new design that's supposed to be safer, so many may be available for a buck or less at yard sales. Give it a try, the price is right and you can air test to your hearts content for captive targets whether in sand or dirt. And it's rust free!

Use your homemade scoop for a season before your declare it indestructable!

I predict your scoop will break on the first full day of use. I'm not trying to be mean, but we have seen this idea many times.

Well Jason, the scoop is about 5 years old. It was about 6 years ago that I first saw the idea but altered that gas can in a different manner then the original. And the first day out it passed the test with flying colors at Cannon Beach here in Oregon and has been back for more. Second, it is a scoop, not a digging tool. Maybe the person or persons that had it fail the first day out didn't know the difference.

The only legitimate use for a scoop of this type is mainly sand or dug up loose dirt, and possibly snow that's not too deep. And heaving it into wet sand where a shovel might be more appropriate is foolishness on the part of the one using it. It's a poor operator that blames their tools. And I'm sorry that you were so sensitive to the word indestructible. I feel the little guy deserves the title as far as I'm concerned. Get over it, this is not a court of law where posting in legal jargon rules. And I've gotten my return on the 50 cent investment for it and more.

Enough said!

One becomes two. After bragging about my "indestructible"scoop and having scubadetector liking to see a picture of it, I went out and tore apart the truck to find it (hadn't been used for a few months). Still didn't find it but it's lurking here somewhere. So, I grabbed another can and after an hours work here it is again. And as I stated before, no reason not to get a few years out of this one too as long as it stays a sifter and not a shovel.

Going to some tot lots tomorrow where there are a couple of volleyball courts. That's where this "earns it's keep" if not at the beach. You can see the front section is now a small scoop and the spout is the handle. No difference in the construction of either of them (old and new).
