Whose your dealer?? I am sure he can help you set it up for the best performance in your area, or is this one of Kellyco detectors where you have to figure it out yourself.
The setting many use on these fourm may or may not work for you, but the first thing is after you have use it in factory preset for the first 40 or so hours and understand the Explorer is to try your own setting to see what works for you. I had someone tell me to run in 32 semi auto for sensitivity and I had seen where I couldnt pick up a coin on top of the ground, so I had to go to manual and down to 18 for that areas and it worked good.
Now I use the X12 as it is lighter weight and more balanced than the stock coil and the X1 probe is to help find those real deep targets that you cant beleive is that deep. I dug a very nice barber dime today that was around 9 inches deep (dug a plug the lenght of the Lesche digger blade and went in with the X1 probe and had to dig deeper before I got a signal in the center of the hole)and without the probe I may have not went that deep and started to make the hole bigger trying to find the target. I also find the targets that are not that deep I can use the probe so I dont have to dig at all as I can use my screwdriver to pry it out of the ground. The X1 save me time also and those target with iron beside the good target is easier to tell too. You would be surprised at how many plug I have seen where someone else has dug and missed the good coins as the couldnt find them.
In fact I have a Sovereign too with the S1 probe on it and when I use my MXT or my X5 I will hipmount the Sovereign control box with the S1 probe to help find the targets when using one of my other detectors. I just dont like to dig big holes in parks like some do to find the targets. The X1 or the S1 probe cant be beat for finding good targets.
By the way I too have detected for 29 years and I am a electronic tech too and I still havent figured the Explorer out completly yet, but working on it. Used many detectors in that time, some good and some bad with none the best for everything, but for the deep coins I look for the Sovereign and the Explorer cant be beat.
Good luck with what ever detector works for you.
