Re-Nourished Beach

The powers that be claim that they are going to re-nourish my favorite beach this winter. Of course one never knows when the Federal Government is involved. Currently they are demanding that private property owners grant the federal government the right to the property in exchange for putting sand on the property. That would make private property public beach. Some of the areas have eroded to the extent that it has washed the sand out from under some of the homes. The Federal Governments plan would make the area under the homes Public Property. I suspect that quite a few of the homeowners will fight them tooth and nail.

My question for you guys with a heck of a lot more experience than I have is what are the prospects after they finish.

They are supposed to pump sand that has washed off the beach back onto the beach. I guess my question is what are the possibility or probability that they will also pump items that have been lost in the past back onto the beach so that they will again be in an area where they can be found.

What has been your experience with re-nourished beaches where he sand was just pumped back into place.

Not good...up here they dredge out the channel so the coal ships can come in since the Big Lake has been falling for a while..you would THINK theres all sorts of loot that was dropped in the channel over the years, I usually scamper out there when they are pumping and bladeing it out with dozers in the hopes for some old gold or silver...so far I have not done worth a hoot. They are constantly moving sand with equipment and raking it all summer too, so I guess a guy has a small chance of getting onto something...the only old coins I have found are in deep cuts that occur from time to time and then theres stuff all over the place thats probably been there for a long time and were not pumped up...maybe down in your area they will accidentally drop the dredge suction line right on top of an old treasure chest? Those are the kind of thoughts that get a fellow out sweeping miles of barren spoils..

ive only had that experience once George, but if they are screening the sand as in these pics finds with be non existant...however if you can find out where they dump the dumpster that all the screening go into you would have much better odds...[attachment 280244 IMG_1141800x600.jpg][attachment 280245 IMG_1140800x600.jpg]

I feel you pain as I have also hunted Folly on occasion ( I live in upstate SC). There is a very interesting discussion of how hunting on Myrtle Beach changed after re-nourishment in the book "Gold Beneath the Waves: Treasure Hunting the Surf and Sand" by Jim F. Brouwer . The book is a great read, it is priced about $16 on Amazon. I did find several old coins on Isle of Palms after the last re-nourishment there that I believe came from the pumped in sand.
I spoke with someone in the Folly Beach mayor's office last week who said the re-nourishment would start in early Jan, but I have no idea how accurate this might be.
I hope the above helps!

some years ago , me an gramma left Minnesota , and went down to golf shores alibama, for a few months, and we dug for shells 3 ft of dredged sand and lots of shells but what was strange was shen we got down to the old beach level it was like hard pan and i started finding rusty cans, all together we got a good grocery bag of nice shells was a great time .

I suppose the sifter depends on the sieve size (opening size). From here its hard to tell, but I bet its openings still allow the small stuff to go through.
Around here, they do the same thing but it only catches stuff larger than a half dollar.
